The UK has 650 MPs for a country of 67 million people. The US has 535 lawmakers for 330 million people. Brits actually get to know their legislator. They attend civic events and live among their constituents. The idea they would be targeted with legitimate death threats is relatively new.
Scott Benton suspended for 35 days, no likely a recall and yet another by-election. Also, the average IQ of MPs will be raised significantly.
Tories now reported to be looking at scrapping/scaling back non-dom tax status. Something they've repeatedly branded as unworkable when mooted by Labour. Amazing what becomes possible when they need to find tax breaks ahead of an election.
Yet another one. One might start to think that corruption is endemic within the Tory party. BREAKING: Michael Gove has been placed under investigation https://t.co/PAiZ4D1jU3📺 Sky 501, Virgin 602, Freeview 233 and YouTube pic.twitter.com/92T2a0QKTD— Sky News (@SkyNews) February 29, 2024
This made me chuckle Jonathan Gullis looks exactly like someone who would vote for Jonathan Gullis.— Florence 🏴 (@LoxyFlo) June 21, 2023
Galloway wins in Rochdale. Reform come 6th, with 6.3% massively underperforming recent polling and behind the Lib Dems who get a fraction of their press coverage.
This by election has been pretty good for a Twitter purge. Any account claiming to be left wing that celebrated Galloway winning can do one.
"And we're getting some worrying news from the Rochdale count where it seems one of the candidates has won." pic.twitter.com/IW3QJiex0M— Toddington (@HXValley) February 29, 2024
Tice going down the Trump route. Yeah, dodgy postal votes meant you only got 6.3% on a 40% turnout. “This has not been a free and fair election” says Richard Tice. He points to the number of postal votes as evidence, but cannot explain to me why this means the election wasn’t fair. #RochdaleByElection pic.twitter.com/WwWfW8py1O— Darshna Soni (@darshnasoni) March 1, 2024
The best possible thing that could happen with Galloway is for Sunak to go for an early election and he gets booted out.
Back in the day, when Galloway was still a member of the Labour party, he was in a meeting with the leader of the Scottish Labour party, Donald Dewar and the topic of Galloway's many enemies within and without the Labour party came up. The story goes that Galloway asked Dewar "Donald, why do so many people take an instant dislike to me?" To which Dewar, who wasn't exactly short of enemies himself, instantly replied "because it saves a lot of time, George"
For connoisseurs of British leftist infighting, the late Christopher Hitchens' portrait of "Gorgeous George" can hardly be beaten. ‘I knew a bit about Galloway. He had had to resign as the head of a charity called “War on Want,” after repaying some disputed expenses for living the high life in dirt-poor countries. Indeed, he was a type well known in the Labour movement. Prolier than thou, and ostentatiously radical, but a bit too fond of the cigars and limos and always looking a bit odd in a suit that was slightly too expensive. By turns aggressive and unctuous, either at your feet or at your throat; a bit of a backslapper, nothing’s too good for the working class: what the English call a “wide boy.”’ Marvelous writer. Pity his political judgement wasn't as good.
And there's this. Reminded once again of the time Galloway came to speak at my school in the late 90s, and a boy asked him if he would apologise for praising Saddam, and in response he threatened to hit the boy (later clarifying 'I meant hit him with a writ') and stormed out.— JWL (@jwsal) March 1, 2024 Also saw one earlier (but can't find now) where he was invited to a University to speak, booked himself into the most expensive hotel available and then sent them a bill that would have used up more than their entire annual budget.
Sunak making a speech condemning political extremism would be reasonable if his party didn't currently contain the likes of Braverman and Truss.
Steven Fielding, professor of politics at Nottingham University. When I was at Cambridge Labour students invited him to speak. completely without any consultation he stayed in the most expensive hotel & billed us. Had we paid it we would’ve been bankrupted. So we didn’t.— Steven Fielding (@PolProfSteve) March 1, 2024
A vacant man, leading a hollowed-out party makes an empty speech to connect with a country they have vandalised for 15 years and are preparing to abandon
