JoCo giving another hapless tory a good kicking on Politics Live. As she says, why would we believe anything they're now saying about this supposed £36Bn on other projects when they're JUST cancelled this one. He tried to say that they would would because, 'We've explained where the money is coming from for them', but, surely, isn't the reason HS2 is being scrapped is precisely because they want to SAVE that money?
Every year the Tories get dumber, but try as they might, they can not catch American Republicans, who are in the same downward spiral but who started earlier. I rate today's Tories as being about equal to our 2015 Republicans. They have a lot of work ahead of them yet if they are to become as foolish as all-out MAGA. But I must confess, this lady's comment was a good start along that process.
Oh dear. Classic Dom does it again Someone in the Labour Party should send Dominic Cummings a thank you note https://t.co/5nNeTZgeNl pic.twitter.com/OsgSZZGYZh— Alexander Clarkson (@APHClarkson) October 4, 2023
Ah, OK. Yes, definitely. He's just getting her to do the dirty work so he can appear 'reasonable' for some of the better off tory marginals.
Not sure 'Unherd' is the best thing to be quoting as they have various 'troubling' writers on their staff or, at least, as contributors.
Sunak wants to cast himself as "change" but unlike in American politics there are no obstacles to him doing what he wants. He either makes the changes and is the Establishment running on a record or he fails to do so and is seen as ineffectual. This is such a dumb strategy.
In America, a supine political media environment means a self-contradicting political strategy might work. IOKIYAR. What's the scene in Britain?
Not content with cancelling things that were never going to happen, they're now announcing things that have already happened. The Government today announced it will extend the Metrolink to Manchester AirportOnly one problem... that tram line was opened in 2014 https://t.co/ElJXrAhKAx— John Stevens (@johnestevens) October 4, 2023
right but this has been their modus all year. Announce some crap for the sundays, then don't do it. Governance for them now just means a media cycle
If only it were that simple. They said on C4 news that there's one part of northern rail, (somewhere around Bradford IIRC), that was announced in 2010 by the pig fecker and gidiot, that was then cancelled by May. It was then restarted by by Johnson before being re-cancelled by the lettuce, only to be re-announced again now by Sunak. One could observe this is no way to run a railroad but it turns out, it is.
Scorched earth policy Between this and the land disposal along the route it looks like the government is doing more than just cancelling HS2’s northern phase - they’re actively taking steps that will make it hard to build (the opposite of route safeguarding, the usual approach in these situations) https://t.co/62PTk7buMW— Jon Stone (@joncstone) October 4, 2023
Not really a good day for Sunak. The Prime Minister repeatedly said earlier this week that no decision had been taken on HS2. But we’ve discovered that he recorded this social media video in No10 about scrapping HS2 before going to conference. BTW, by way of an explanation about why costs have risen from the projected £32-37Bn to around £71Bn now, maybe this is part of the reason? During Phase One from London to Birmingham, a total of 10 TBMs will dig 64 miles (103 kilometres) of tunnels on the 140 mile (225 kilometres) route. So almost half of HS2 from London to Birmingham will be in tunnels.
