    Olympics 2012, NYC!!!!!!

Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, it's not announced to the public yet. :D

Actually, as it stands, Paris is the favorite. The French President, Chirac, is in Singapore right now doing some last minute campaigning. We, in an effort to trump their move, have sent in our next President, Hillary.

The vote is in a few hours. I'd love to see it go to New York.

Well, that puts the count of people who want the Olympics in NYC at 4: dreamer, Michael Bloomberg, Dan Doctoroff, and Bruce Rattner .

I'm sure Hillary's there doing her civic duty of sabotaging the bid, thereby representing the wishes of her constituents.

You may have a point there. She doesn't look exactly happy being there. "Support" may be too strong a word to use. :)

I've read about how NYC has far less public support of hosting the 2012 games than any other contender. The lack of support was noted in the initial judging of the bids.

Seriously, what accounts for the low numbers?

They know Argentina will take the soccer and the basketball gold, and those are the only sports that matter. :D

Don't sell yourselves short, you're a lock for the Diving medals as well.

As to why NYers don't want it here:

    1. We're already New York.
What is the olympics going to do, make us MORE famous? You could say the same for Paris & London, but NY has no "need" to host the Olympics to raise it's profile. So, why do it? Just to watch some russian thyroid case win the high jump in Central Park? No thanks.

    2.Cost.
Dude, we've got tons of money. Except, we're some broke motherfunkers. Schools are crap, bridges and roads are falling apart, our budget is a joke...we just don't need to divert money from real things that matter to spend $ 5 billion on a 3 week sporting event. We are literally still paying off debt from the 1970s. (Ford to city: drop dead. City to Ford: Your wife is a drunken ho.).

Plus, much as it would be cool to have some extra recreational facilities around, the reality is that it would mean more places like new Shea Stadium for guys that are already rich (and thusly own sports teams) to make more money off of the average guy going broke on $ 50k a year.

Like the NY Press said: One of the plans calls for putting the riflery events at a new Olympic Shooting Center in the Bronx. The Bronx already has an Olympic Shooting Center. It's called The Bronx.

In all seriousness, these facilities will get built with some private/public money. Then used for the Olympics, which will generate some tax revenues that disappear after a year. Then, some company will operate them and charge my white ass $ 75 per game of Tennis, of which $ 50 will end up in Trump's pocket, after buying the place for 10 cents on the taxpayer dollar. Man, funk dat.

    3. Hassle.
For all of the sh!t we get done, we're kinda lazy about "other" stuff. Essentially, we're here to tread water, not change the world. We don't really want/need more construction, more tourists, more hassle. Give that crap to someone like Atlanta or Athens who are (no offense) dumb enough to think that the Olympics are worth putting up with that noise. I don't want the Olympics, I just want the D train to run on time, ya know?

So, would it be "cool"? Yes. Would it be "worth" it? No.

    Good post. Points well taken.

I am interested, however, in what exactly this "********" is that y'all get done. Is it any different from the ******** that the rest of us do like working, commuting, paying bills, dressing the kids, cooking dinner, going to school, changing Uncle Buck's Depends undergarment, etc.?

Here's a happy Hillary campaigning for New York.

I think it's between London and Paris, i reckon Paris will get it, they havn't hosted the event since the 1920's and London last did it 1948, but London will have a better stadium and they say the stad de france was never built to host the olympics.

    COME ON LONDON!!!!!! :)

Here are the latest odds from Bet365.com:

    Paris 1.40
    London 3.00
    Madrid 10.00
    New York 34.00
    Moscow 67.00

Hell, I might drop a $20 on Paris even though the money's not great.

Edit: I ended up putting $30 on Paris. Only a $12 return, but should be easy cash.

I am hoping that London get the games. I like having the games in the US, but I really think it is past time to have some other nations get the games that haven't had them yet. Or haven't had them in a long time.

I keep hoping this will be the year they'll get together, look at each other, and someone will finally have the guts to say, "Enough, already. Let's put them on hiatus for another couple hundred years."

I am hoping London wins but I think Paris will. As already noted, it's longer since Paris hosted and additionally London's transport infrastructure lets it down. There really on't seem to be any weak links in the Paris bid, despite the very recent claims of the unsuitability of the Stade de France for athletics.

They still have the "last city out" balloting?

If that's the case, New York will beat out Moscow in the balloting, but that's it. I'd put money on Paris, too.
