He is a good guy. I know him from the Dragons and the Glens W-League team. For my Glens fandom, he gave me an official training jersey. I think the fact that I drove to Pleasanton for a weekday evening game did it.

    Wow, another Director of Communications!

Is that like a Technical Director?

The director of communications reminds John Fisher to keep his mouth shut. :)

No. It's easiest job with the Quakes as they don't communicate to the public.

Well even if he did, I think Ryan would have about as much chance of telling Fish what to do as Twitter / X "CEO" Linda Yaccarino has of telling Elon Musk what to do :).

Who was the old DOC? Did he have his own "official" thread? If not, why does this guy need one here?

I think the "one time in 15 years" thing is a bit tongue-in-cheek, but FTR Fish has made several comments about the Quakes over the years, at least there are many statements attributed to him, which is no different than the ESPN thing.

For example, this is what he said upon Matias's departing:

“Over the past four years, Matias has given everything he has to our club, and we recognize the efforts he made,” said Earthquakes Managing Partner John Fisher. “I have had a chance to get to know him and his family during his time here, and we really appreciate what they have done for the Earthquakes. We wish them well in the future.”

And here, commenting on the hiring of Shawlee as President:

“The fact that Jared has been with the club for 15 years and worked his way up is a testament to his talent and hard work,” said Earthquakes Managing Partner John Fisher. “He has proven to be a team-first leader that cares first about the club, the fans, the staff, and our local community. I’m confident his leadership will be critical as we strive to be a top MLS club on and off the field.”

Why are there so many Directors of everything in sports these days?

What does a Dir of Communications do that a Marketing director doesn’t do? Does this guy report to Tutul Rahman or is it the reverse?

The director of communications doles out media credentials, as I understand it, which is not a marketing function. S/he may also arrange player interviews and interface with the broadcasting teams.

Communications is dealing with the media, not marketing at all.

Back when i was working at HP, Marketing always had Marketing Communications as sub-departments.
I guess that’s all old school, or maybe just doesn’t apply to sports…
