Matthew Hoppe was born about seven months before the Earthquakes won their first MLS Cup title. I’m old! GO SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES!!! -G

So for those of you in the know…..will he be a starter and if so replacing whom? This a good signing or just so-so ?
He’ll definitely bring in your face asshole forward attitude…he is really proactive and has an ability to put himself in great spots to score…hope it works out.
@Quakes05 does this move the needle for you? First bit of real ambition I've seen in a long time. Likely replaces Cade imo.
If I read correctly he had been loaned out to a Scottish league team, one report said that he wasn’t a starter there.
have to say I'm thrilled to see Leitch bring in an attacking player, right at the buzzer! looking forward to seeing how he can fit in and contribute.
You can see how he contributed to the USMNT in the past... should be games in youtube. Decent attacking threat.
The variance is high with this move -- could be incredible, could flop. Someone who can't break into the starting lineup for Hibs is likely also a bench option for us, but he's hardly seen the field in two years. He could really take off with some regular time. I just hope we got a buy option, in order to get a taste if he starts approaching his ceiling.
From the Earthquakes page. His name's pronunciation is not hope but I am sure we will keep the pun here. Also looking at the height and weight, is more like Adam Jahn than Lenny/Gordon? Matthew Hoppe Pronunciation: Haw-Pee Position: Forward Height: 6-3 Weight: 174 Born: March 13, 2001, in Yorba Linda, Calif. Preferred Foot: Right Hometown: Yorba Linda, Calif. Previous Club: Middlesbrough F.C. (EFL) College: N/A Roster Designation: U22 Initiative
Also, I just want to clock yet again people trying to bury Cade, this time for someone whose last good game was two years ago.
Saw a YouTube clip of an interview with Charlie Davies, who at the time thought his move to the Scottish league was a mistake and that he should have come to mls. well he’s here now so keeping fingers crossed this will spark his career.
He can play as a forward or winger, so he will provide competition for both Ebobisse and Cowell. Who will start will depend on how they perform. Hoppe hasn't done much since the summer of 2021 when he was decent for the US at the Gold Cup. Maybe that will change if he gets some consistent minutes. Or maybe he's just a streaky player with a few bright spots but otherwise not that impressive. We will find out. The most impressive moment of Hoppe's career came in January 2021 when he had a hat trick for Schalke vs Hoffenheim at age 19. A lot of that was Amine Harit, who unfortunately does not play for the Quakes. But still, Hoppe was only the third American to score a hat trick in a top five league, after Clint Dempsey and Christian Pulisic (now four with Folarin Balogun vs Lorient last season). And he had arguably the best set of goals out of those guys. But reading too much into a sample size of one game is silly, see the "JJ Koval would make a great CB" folks... You don't change your formation for a guy who has one goal over the last three seasons, and in Scotland of all places... one goal in 9 games in a league that is well below MLS level. -------------Ebobisse/Hoppe------------- Cowell/Hoppe------------------Espinoza
Hmmmm….So 2 1/2 years ago I recommended Akinola and a year and a half ago I said Hoppe and now both come within 2 weeks. Is Hoppe in game condition yet? Both are low risk loan spells but at least they are attempting to address offensive production. Hopefully at least one of these guys turns out good enough to sign permanently.
