I still can't believe that progressives had so much of a problem with that David Shor post as to chase him out of his job. That's wacked.

And I agree with you and I don’t think that the cartoon targets that, but the sudden concern of MSM with “cancel culture”, while the country stares at fascism in the face. But maybe I’m not woke enough to see what you are seeing in the image.

It's a rich image and there's a lot going on, and to be sure, police state action is pressing. But it's also seems to express a willingness to let the left slide on things for which it can (maybe should) be criticized for. And if the left goes down that path, it will become way to Trumpy for my taste. Better policies to be sure, but a demand for constant fealty is also dangerous whether I lean to a particular side or not.

Whether the cancel culture phenomenon is exaggerated in corporate media or seized upon by the right, that doesn't mean that stupid shit by the left goes uncalled out.

The problem is the asymmetry. The right has embraced their fringe and has little or no facts to base their positions on, and have moved as far away from reality and science as they have been allowed, without the MSM questioning them. Furthermore, they are not looking for argument and feedback, but for soundbites to show their supporters. When their positions are called on, they are defended by calling their opponents on their intolerance and on the implicit liberal media bias: “Cancel Culture!”

Are there extremists on the left? Sure, but they’re not guiding the Democrats’ policies and they’re not embraced by the party. Have dems gone overboard sometimes when their own break ranks? Yeah, unfortunately it happens from time to time.

But is that the most important discussion that we want to have right now? Is that the defining issue of our times as multiple editors and apparently liberal intellectuals seem to think? My take is that the issue should be well below Fascism and the Pandemic, just to name the top two.

The WaPo one day had that Cancel Culture Op-Ed theme, but overall I don't see the MSM fetishizing on the issue. Fox and the right-wing media, sure, but there's no hope for them.

Not overly artistic (OK, not at all artistic, as the cartoon thread ought to be) but still damn funny.
