They borrowed certain elements from certain artists like everyone else. However, for their case, the influencee did it better than the influencors. Killing Joke, Beatles, Pixies, it doesn't really matter.
It is. Both songs rely on a drop D tuning and sound so similiar it's not even funny. The only difference being is that Come as You Are is slower. Same sound, virtually the same notes.
I think they were. That's just my opinion though. I mean if you take into context their cultural and musical impact, critical acclaim, mainstream success, sound, hit songs, the way everything flowed together, than yeah. It would be crazy to think otherwise.
Dude, Killing Joke was quite possibly one of the best English 80s post punk bands and were probably a big influence on Nirvana. Throw in Jesus and Mary Chain and Joy Division and you've got some enjoyable music.
Not every band has had a lawsuit filed against them by one of the bands they 'borrowed' from. There's borrowing and there's plagiarism. There's no debate ok this point and musically Come As You Are is what it is. A good song but one that owes itself to a band who had been around since 1979.
You know what I like about Oasis in regards to this debate? "All I ever wanted to do was make a record. Here's what you do: you pick up your guitar, you rip a few people's tunes off, you swap them round a bit, get your brother in the band, punch his head in every now and again, and it sells. " Noel Gallagher.
I didn't say they weren't an influence on Nirvana. All I said was that the Nirvana did it better than the people that influenced them. I also didn't say that kind of music isn't enjoyable. I have Psychocandy by Jesus and Mary Chain. It's an enjoyable album, even if the white noise that clutters the album is annoying.
Haha. I just showed this post to becky and she was like "wow dave, I love your friend, he knows his music" I'm glad you're in Detroit Any chance you can post both rifs so we can vote on if they are similar or virtually the fricking same. I know where vegas would put it's money.
Always wanted to, maybe one day.... As for borrowing sound....Muse and Radioahead anyone? People were saying they ripped Radiohead's sound/style from the Bends and OK Computer, and a journalist asked Thom Yorke what he thought of it, and he said: "Tell them good luck with Kid A." Always found it funny. And true story, when a friend played a muse record before I knew who they were I thought he had put on a Radiohead CD I had not heard. But that Knights of Cydonia song is pretty rad.
Sorry I missed this, you said Nirvana was better than their influences, meaning you think that Nirvana was better than the bEatles? Yikes. I mean, I am by no means a huge Beatles fan, but.....well Yikes covers it.
Quite possibly one of the most underrated guitarists out there, John Frusciante, of the Chili Peppers:
Yeah he is amazing, BUT, I heard a solo album by him once, and it was awful. Big diffrence for me between crazy/creative/talented and just crazy. Edit: Mars Volta for me is on the good side of that thin line.
Heh, be glad that you don't visit here. We have so many shows here it's not even funny. My parents have always said if you want to sell out a show, play in Detroit. No prob. And upon some further analysis Come as You Are is slightly and I mean slightly arranged. They are so similiar in terms of sound, arrangement, and tuning it's not even funny. It wasn't Niandra LaDes and Just a t-shirt or Smile From the Streets you hold was it? If so yeah, I agree. Shadows Collide With People, Inside of Emptiness, and To Record Only Water for Ten Days are awesome.
I just read they(Nirvana and it's management) were nervous about releasing it due to it's similarities.
Good stuff. I've enjoyed this thread tonight, it's helped me get over the baseball Amazing parallels between the quality of posts here and elsewhere on BS
That would kill it for me. I am a Rock music fan always and forever. Sure I listen to some hip hop, a little jazz and classic stuff and various things as well, but Rock 'n Roll, wether it be Punk, Indie, Classic Rock, Prog Rock, what ever is what I'll always be, and acoustic guitar, just does not due it for me. Even the souther or country influenced Rock or Punk bands I like most play electric or even bandjo.
