I lived in the boonies from the late 60's thru 2013. Never locked the doors[*] as my home was a safe house when my kids were in HS. There are a bunch of Summer Camps in town and the young hopeful lads from neighboring towns came looking to get lucky. If they were in no condition to return home I called the parents to let them know they were spending the night. Rarely was a problem. *I did have a Doberman!
And abortion. But Boca's point is fair. In general, we shouldn't be comparing crime rates today to our very worst day but rather to our average day.
Something I wrote for ages. Detroit/NY/DC of 1983 is a much different world than those places of this year. EDIT: Should add aging out of crime too. I don't think it's one factor, but like many things, several factors.
Growing up, in my upper-middle class neighborhood in the hills next door to LA, and living on a cul-de-sac, there was a time during middle school (I think) when the front door lock broke. Didn't get fixed until my mom kicked my dad out beginning of senior year. And even then, didn't always lock the door. There were vacations we went on where the door was unlocked.
There is a part of Milwaukee that was really shitty from the 1970s to the 1980s. But then the gays moved in and the poor moved out and it became really, really nice. If I stayed in Milwaukee, it is an area I'd have liked to live in. I'd be okay with it now because the gentrification completed many years ago. I do this when I run, though I'm also aware of the place and time I'm out running.
speaking of heroin and crack https://www.nytimes.com/2023/12/07/us/politics/hunter-biden-indictment.html Hunter Biden Charged With Evading Taxes on Millions From Foreign Firms The Justice Department charged President Biden’s son after a long-running and wide-ranging investigation with substantial political repercussions.
Am I wrong, or didn’t Hunter already settle tax evasion with the IRS, backpaying taxes in full but avoiding prosecution?
There's a neighborhood in Detroit known as the Cass Corridor, which was home to things like Creem, Joni Mitchell, Sixto Rodriguez, and also things like drugs, prostitution, and known for a child abduction case. You didn't go into the Cass unless you were looking for trouble or the Old Miami (The best dive bar ever). Only time I wear headphones out and about is at an airport terminal when I'm checked in and have time to kill. It's drilled into me to not wear them in public for safety reasons. And I still feel weird putting them on in an airport terminal even though it's one of the safest places you can be.
The indictment contains no reference to President Biden. Biden has a fairly impeccable record, but along the way, he lost a wife in a car accident, lost a son to brain cancer, and had a son hooked on drugs and use his family name for influence. He is only minutely flawed, and the Republicans can't handle that. Perhaps if Biden would have been twice divorced, had a child out of wedlock, the target on his back would be smaller. But as it is, the Republicans are desperate to bring him down to their level (or the level of Trump). It is a lack of respect of the person and for the office.
There was an agreement in principle, but the judge saw it as messy, threw it out, and told them to go back and rework it. Then Weiss got appointed as special council to do as he saw fit, and here we are.
He already paid the back taxes. Weiss actually was involved in making that plea deal, and the judge struck it down because the language was too broad.
Which wouldn't have happened at all if the judge on the case hadn't taken the time to really look at the original deal the justice department was offering. But sure, keep patting yourselves on the back. Hypocrites.
My date's eating all the fully loaded nachos. All the ones with the meat and cheese and everything, the ones that are fully loaded, she's hogging them, so I'm mostly getting just, like, just chips. Like mostly just chips, like nothing on 'em, but, like, a little bit of cheese and maybe one little nugget of meat.
Imagine being that pissed off that a fellow citizen is happy the government isn't completely corrupt. .
The Biden family got $$ from foreign nationals and companies in China, Russia, Ukraine, Romania, and Kazakhstan. So if their Russian money runs low, they have other sources.
Jobs keep coming: BREAKING: The U.S. economy added another 199,000 jobs in November. New reports also indicate that more Americans are working than ever before in American history. The full power and might of America’s industrial base is on display because of President Biden’s leadership.— Kamala’s Wins (@harris_wins) December 8, 2023
