Is Hannity blackmailing Moones, and joining the Messican standoff? Sean Hannity to Devin Nunes last night on report that Nunes traveled to Vienna to meet with former Ukrainian prosecutor general Viktor Shokin: "I know more about this than maybe you want me to reveal." pic.twitter.com/V6e4CAX9GD— Matthew Gertz (@MattGertz) November 26, 2019 Also, Schiff, subpoena Sean!!!
Possibly, yeah. A federal judge is only supposed to decide cases/controversies and not issue advisory opinions. So there can't really be any ruling on the assertion of executive privilege until it's actually asserted. This ruling was just about the Admin trying to assert a blanket immunity from complying with a subpoena.
Yoss, i presume you think this absolute privilege argument will be eventually shot down? It's not like the concept of exec privilege hasn't been argued before. IIRC from back in my day, the law was relatively settled.
Regardless of the story, that is a pretty cool picture. Would probably be even better in black and white.
An assertion of absolute privilege would more than likely be shot down. But I wouldn't say the law is settled, certainly not at the margins. The Nixon Watergate era cases were more about an absolute assertion, so the Supreme Court didn't have to get into the nitty gritty details --- say, the way a trial court judge would when someone asserts attorney-client privilege (I'm thinking in a big complex civil case, not criminal) and you compile your privilege logs, and the trial court conducts an in camera review to determine which assertions are legitimate, etc., etc., etc. Most of the time, the Executive Branch and Congress have come to an agreement about testimony, document production, before this sort of review would become necessary.
Hannity only admitted that he knows about Cowllusion... https://www.mediaite.com/tv/sean-ha...e-report-about-you-is-a-lot-of-outright-lies/ “I’ve gotta to be honest, I know more about this than maybe you want me to reveal, so I will let you say it in your own words. I saw the report about you. I happen to know a lot of it is outright lies.”
I think that's called "editorial distortion" in Chomsky and Herman's Manufacturing Consent. There are five features that I can't recall and don't have time to look up (though Jitty Slitter probably has it tattooed somewhere on his body). But that has a lot to do with the reason that Maggie Haberman is basically a White House stenographer. This isn't to say that the Times is a cavalcade of hacks. I think it was I.F. Stone who used to say there was always great reporting in the Newspaper of Record. It just wasn't goint to be on the front page.
Case in point: Wall Street Journal. Fine reporting and has done well on the impeachment coverage, but the editorial board is disconnected.
I think it was The Nation that used to have a regular feature where they'd quote a claim made in a WSJ editorial and then a passage from a WSJ news story that blatantly contradicted it. They'd have more than one a week.
One of my favorite pieces I ever wrote was an op-ed piece. It called out a university board member (Who was super high up at two auto companies), for stating that if he was looking at two resumes, the one with my alma mater wouldn't be regarded as much as say the one with Michigan State or University of Michigan. I had receipts, cited various studies about benefits of smaller colleges, compared him to an awful character in a novel, and claimed he was more or less out of touch. I got a lot of praise for it, managed to make a big shot auto exec look like a fool, and felt good. It's been ten years since I am still proud of it.
We were more into Marshall McLuhan, but yeah - back in the days when I worked in guerilla advertising in the mid 90s, those ideas were influential because "the kidz didn't trust advertising" Ironically that was also the sunrise of PR - to distribute messaging from a trusted source IMO Maggie H represents the bill for 20 years of spin driven coverage.
I still read op-eds but I've lived long enough to where Charles Krauthammer went from being the worst columnist on any given day to the best. And this was due to no improvement in his opinions.
Remember when i had that crazy idea that Trump was at the centre of anti-semitic messaging around impeachment? How does "the jew coup" grab you? Just coincidence of course... Thread on how an outlet that calls impeachment a "JEW COUP" by "SEDITIOUS JEWS" got called on by President Trump at a press conference and interviewed Don Jr. https://t.co/nM5K7sPIHO— Matthew Gertz (@MattGertz) November 26, 2019
The worst is when local papers publish Letters To The Editors on their social media. So you get gems like "I Will Not Leave My Home Until the Town Removes The Parking Meters" or "The REAL Connection Between Taxes And The Nazis" or "The Illuminati Dug A Pothole On Washington Street."
Dude, aren't wearing your mind control protection device? Freaking noob. Everyone knows that squirrels are just the image that the Illuminati project into your mind when they are performing their nefarious acts. If you had been wearing your mind control protection device, you would have been able to see the squirrels for what they really are... Ferrets..
I'd be curious to hear Jared's response should a reporter ask him this question, what with Jared being Trump defenders' Exhibit A to charges of racism.
