Re: 5 years $250million- THEY WERE KIDDING RIGHT?!!!!! You're very right, and I hope he's not fragile because MLS is a physical league. I noticed the physicalness(is that a word?) of MLS gave Celtic and Everton problems last summer. And in Evertons case big problems.
Re: 5 years $250million- THEY WERE KIDDING RIGHT?!!!!! At what? That the only girl hes ever kissed is his mom?
Re: 5 years $250million- THEY WERE KIDDING RIGHT?!!!!! Was this before or after he got kicked off of Madrid? Free kick goals are even more infrequent than home runs- not a very consistent way to make a living.
Re: 5 years $250million- THEY WERE KIDDING RIGHT?!!!!! All thsi talk of the ladies would only increase MLS's popularity.
Re: 5 years $250million- THEY WERE KIDDING RIGHT?!!!!! Not sure if this has been posted yet, but a breakdown of the salary : http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/6253829.stm
Re: 5 years $250million- THEY WERE KIDDING RIGHT?!!!!! well, he was never on the Spanish national team so far as I know. But I hear he did learn to speak a little Spanish... ...which should help him in SoCal!! see how it all works out?
Re: 5 years $250million- THEY WERE KIDDING RIGHT?!!!!! Go back and read. This was asked and answered earlier.
Re: 5 years $250million- THEY WERE KIDDING RIGHT?!!!!! I hope your head is flat so my beer doesn't fall off.
Re: 5 years $250million- THEY WERE KIDDING RIGHT?!!!!! All this hype for someone who couldn't even make the Spanish national team. What a waste. Heck, he couldn't even crack the Tunisian starting eleven.
Re: 5 years $250million- THEY WERE KIDDING RIGHT?!!!!! Thx, the interview with Friedel was really interesting.
Re: 5 years $250million- THEY WERE KIDDING RIGHT?!!!!! Last post to you as I am beginning to realize you are not worth the time. You have to start somewhere you cant force the young talent to stay here and you cant make them magically want to stay here. But making MLS more recognizable in the public using money off of the increased marketing to increase salaries, coupled with seeing a soccer player become a star in the American media makes MLS seem like not such a bad option in a few years. Also MLS is not just going to sit there an market Beckham until he dies off they will move on and do new and great things like the academies they mandated this offseason, more SSS and more money coming and staying in the league. Having Beckham will just accelerate the process and improve the league. And on the girls you are a total fool. I am a college student who has had 2 classes today. Everyone knows I am the soccer guy so they all asked. Also friends and family of the female sex ranging from age 65 to 13 called me today to talk about it so you should get over it and yourself.
Re: 5 years $250million- THEY WERE KIDDING RIGHT?!!!!! I did read, and I find it interesting that considering you "lurked" for 2 years you still don't know what you are talking about and the dynamics of the DP rule and the whole purpose of the cap restrictions.
Re: The 'let's financially justify 4 yr/36m for Beckham' thread While I largely agree with this, I think the some of the clubs/leagues in the Middle East are getting a reputation for exporting talent (especially from Africa). They have a long way to go, but I think you'll see more players go through there than in the past. Bakari Koné played in Qatar before going to Europe, and I wouldn't be surprised if Sebastián Soria goes to Europe soon. Also, Mamam Cherif Touré played in UAE before going to Europe.
Re: 5 years $250million- THEY WERE KIDDING RIGHT?!!!!! He's made free kicks the focal point of his whole career, why stop now? Did you even notice they made a movie that focused on his free kicks and celebrity status not his soccer playing ability. That celebrity status is what the image rights payments are for and they encompass 94% of this reported deal (3M soccer 47M other)
Re: 5 years $250million- THEY WERE KIDDING RIGHT?!!!!! For an "old" guy with over a decade long career you have plenty of data to look at and see if he's fragile. hint, he's not.
Re: 5 years $250million- THEY WERE KIDDING RIGHT?!!!!! MLS doesn't need Beckham to move on and do new and great things like the academies...
Re: 5 years $250million- THEY WERE KIDDING RIGHT?!!!!! Actually, neither are in order. Trecker broke nothing. He put up a tease two days ago. He DID, however, change the original tease post on his blog to the Beckham story being confirmed. With the original timestamp to make it look like he had the story first. Still a douche.
Re: 5 years $250million- THEY WERE KIDDING RIGHT?!!!!! If David Beckham was ugly, would anyone be caring about him right now? Hes being paid for publicity, not performance. & if he doesnt perform, how will he keep headlines in America? We already have too many flavors of the week as it is
Re: 5 years $250million- THEY WERE KIDDING RIGHT?!!!!! First of all MLS is already forcing talent to stay. Uhhh have you ever heard of Benfica, Eddie Johnson and $3million dollars? Freddy Adu's new coach at Salt Lake has already stated that they hold a 3 yr option on Freddy that they plan to exercise. Hmmm, this guy will be 18 soon, wants to go to Europe, Europe wants him, but if a 3 yr option is enforced, he will be forced to stay. How long has Dempsey been trying to leave, not to mention extremely vocal about it? Like I said earlier the point is to get it to where they WANT TO STAY, and you bring in the Euro and S. American talent with them. Imagine the league with Convey, Beasley, Keller, McBride, Gooch, Dempsey, Friedel, Howard, Rossi, Lewis etc in their prime, as well as Beckham, Ronaldo, and others to follow. MLS(U.S) isn't as far off from Euro soccer as people think. That was proven at the Dallas Cup when the Dallas Texans S.C finished off Manchester United, and a host of others to win the super group. Soccer in the U.S isn't that far off. Now, with not being that far off and you keep allowing the best players to leave which all comes down to money. Adding Beckham while cool and all as it may seem still doesn't solve the problem of young talent bolting off to Europe. As for the acadamies, they don't matter, and the reason they don't matter is because you don't have to go to one to be seen in this country. Next and last and like someone said earlier, are we now hoping that converting girls to soccer fans is the solution? And uhhh what happens to the Becks admirers when he's gone? End of your stupid discussion.
Re: The 'let's financially justify 4 yr/36m for Beckham' thread Hey Guys listening to a bunch of local radio sports shows here and it seems like the overall feeling is that this is a good signing at first cause it will get the league alot of media attention and more fans but it also might kill the league because now all the other fans of the other teams will say "well LA got Becks , when do we get our superstar" and there will be too much money spent and could lead to bankruptcy !! Too much negative view on it now , do u guys agree ? I personally dont know wut to think other than we should wait and see how it will shape out
Re: 5 years $250million- THEY WERE KIDDING RIGHT?!!!!! He's the only soccer player who's worth whatever MLS will actually pay him. He will get more media coverage than any other soccer player would. He will sell more tickets than any other soccer player would. He will get make more Hollywood appearances than any other soccer player would. He will sell more Galaxy jerseys than any other soccer player would. He will get more ESPN highlights than any other soccer player would. etc.
Re: 5 years $250million- THEY WERE KIDDING RIGHT?!!!!! Will he lead to long term gains/ long term coverage? For how long? What if he doesnt produce? LA already sells out most of its games. How will this help struggling teams? How will this help MLS? But he & Adidas keep the money, so how does that help MLS? etc.[/QUOTE] Thats assuming he plays like a superstar, but most see him as over the hill.
Re: 5 years $250million- THEY WERE KIDDING RIGHT?!!!!! MLS is the last place Beckham could get this deal done. The rest of the world has already worked out he's no good, wheras the US still have to learn that they just bought the world's most expensive clothes horse and not a soccer player.
