You must be Jamie's neighbor or something.

On that thread, the notion of the Big News being the Beckham signing was considered, and people were like, nah, that's not exactly unexpected, so if that's it, Jamie has oversold the product.

Seriously, dude, you need to check out all the contemporaneous headlines about how RM and Beckham were parting ways. Bigsoccer was awash BJB (before Jamie's Blog) with rumors that Becks was coming this season.

Becks isnt even the best player on England- which is why he got kicked
    off the team.

Of course he sells tickets & creates headlines, but the real question
is for how long, & at what price?

Re: 5 years $250million- THEY WERE KIDDING RIGHT?!!!!!

Guy are you retarted? How many girls do you know that watch football because Tom Brady is cute? Watch baseball because they think Jason Giambi is cute. And I mean watch game after game after game. At the end of the day it always comes back to talent, and if you don't watch soccer David Beckham may get you to watch once maybe twice, and I guarantee an entire game won't be watched. And like I said earlier, ALLOWING YOUR YOUNG TALENT TO LEAVE AND SIGNING AGING OVERSEAS TALENT IS BAD FOR THE LEAGUE. Hell, how much is Zidane's old age worth to you. I don't mind David Beckham coming to MLS but the price paid is too much. And to say MLS isn't paying that much is crazy. Was Madrid willing to give up 100% of him imaging rights? NO. Was anyone other than MLS, yep, probably the Saudis. When you offer up what could potentially be the worlds richest sports contract, I'd expect you to be a top 10 player in the world. In Beckham's case I don't even think he's top 100. Good Young players to make MLS grow I want, aging, bench riding Galactagos I don't. I mean as sports fans, as soccer fans, you aren't going to sit here and tell me that you suddenly think L.A is a better team. You couldn't possibly believe that. From a marketing aspect signing Beckham was great for Beckham. Beckham is a worldwide star. He's Michael Jackson everywere BUT the U.S. as far as his star power goes. One thing I can say for sure is that he's definetly in the right city for star power, but what happens this time next year when he's KNOWN AS DAVID BECKHAM, BUT NOT DAVID BECKHAM THE L.A GALAXY PLAYER. And for all of you that think that's crazy, it's really not. That's what's going to happen.

Thanks. For next week's class, can you explain to us the difference between that yellow-card-thingy and that red-card-thingy?

I'm generally entertained by these condescending lectures from Europeans who, oblivious to the various idiosyncracies of soccer as a sport and a business in America, feel the need to explain the "facts" to ignorant Yanks. But they do get tiring after while.

Regardless of how he said it, he does have a point- Beckham got kicked off his national team, & basically got kicked off his club team.

Hes damaged goods IMO- not worth $50,000,000 a year thats for sure

What the hell is with all these apparent Americans with Jan 2007 join dates arguing that this is a mistake?

The only points I saw were that "Beckham sux [sic]" and that he is nowhere near various others in terms of popularity and talent.

The first is not a good point. The second is an obvious and irrelevant one.

As for your point that he's not worth $50,000,000 a year, well it's a good thing that's not what we're paying him.

    1) Stop calling me guy
    2) Stop saying the word retarded

    3) It's obvious you are new here and haven't kept up on any of the discussions on bigsoccer and the dp rule and the fact that MLS IS NOT PAYING MORE THAN 400K for his contract the rest is AEG, Adidas and other companies paying him.

    4) Trapping Dempsey in MLS against his wishes also does nothing. Hopefully a rising tide will lift all boats and if this makes money we will see the salary cap rise and minimum salaries rise as a result.

    and.....

    5) Yes I actually know plenty of girls who started watching respected sports because of the personalities and looks of the players. They then become fans and more knowledgeable about the sports. It happens with women of all ages from my mom (not lying) saying that joe montana is cute and becoming a 49ers fan to my cousin calling me today saying that she loves beckham and wants a galaxy kit for her birthday.

    6) Between the lines just opened up with the Beckham story over the playoffs and broke down the Galaxy for everyone so thats just more exposure to the casual.

The pro-Beckham argument seems to be going over your head.

How many people buy Yankee baseball caps without being able to name more than a few players? Kobe Bryant jerseys, UNC jerseys, etc...? It's about pop culture, it's about being "cool," it's about casual water-cooler conversations on Monday mornings, it's about being on CNN's website, and ESPN's website, and being on Sportcenter's top 10 after bending a freekick into the upper corner.

They aren't paying Beckham to make LA a much better team (though I think he will be a positive influence on them...don't forget he was playing in a World Cup 6 months ago), they're paying him to make LA a household name. Something other than an also-ran in the American sports world.

    "Damaged goods"?

The guy's 31, healthy, in great shape, and has a lot of soccer years left in him. If that's "damaged", then our health care system will be in great shape for years to come.

We are all painfully aware Becks is not Pele at age 26. We're not stupid.

The only thing I'm really concerned about is he's only one player. We need 12-24 bonafides to come into this league under the DP rule and spice up the league, take it to a new level. Then you'll see every city excited about their new signees, and the "new enthusiasm" will be more spread out over the league.

    Anyway.

Re: 5 years $250million- THEY WERE KIDDING RIGHT?!!!!!

I've been trying to say this all day. From a marketing stand point this is cool, but as far as getting a quality player for the money paid, :(. When the Texas Rangers signed Nolan Ryan in his late 30's and gave him millions they did it knowing that he was still one of the top 10 pitchers in baseball. When ARod was given his contract it was based off the fact of his marketablility as well as the fact that he was the best player in MLB. Shaq, What league is David Beckham one of the best in? The only reason he's even going to make the MLS all star team is because he's David Beckham, not because of his play on the field. It's funny everyone can say die in a car crash to me etc, but I still haven't seen anyone answer the question of IS IT GOOD TO LET YOUR YOUNG TALENT LEAVE AND AGING OVERPAID STARS IN? Answer that for me. And if you can say yes I think that's a good thing, then maybe i'm confused and should die in a car crash. But as far as the league goes, I can't see how that can be good.

You're answering from a marketing standpoint, not a sports fan stand point. AS A SPORTS FAN THIS DOES NOT MAKE MLS BETTER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What I mean by "damaged goods" is that hes a player whos stock is
dropping- he just got kicked of his club team, & his national team.

I cant even remember the last time he scored one of his trademark
    free kick goals.

$50,000,000 for one player who may not even score many goals
    is a big risk

Great point about the neanderthals...unfortunately, the neanderthals on this board are misinterpreting those numbers also, and we have to wade through their nonsense.

Wake up America? If everybody knows it, then we probably do as well. Calling Beckham a crappy player is absurd. Marketing aside, David is still a very good player. AEG and MLS probably could care less if Beckham isn't the player he used to be, because he is the most recognizable soccer player in the world. Soccer is a business, and MLS has just aquired the #1 asset in all of soccer. Feel free to argue that I am wrong, but Real Madrid, Serie A clubs , EPL clubs, and MLS all would agree.

Well the answer to that question is no young talent should stay but the competition is much better overseas and if it gets our players better exposure to the game then I am all for it I want a world cup winner and if Demspey and Gooch and Demerit and Convery to name a few can bring that to me I am one happy camper MLS is still a very young league and until the quailty of play improves it will be hard to lure Robinho and guys like him

.....do I want old 37 years olds no....but Becks is only 31 and can still play. maybe he is not C Ronaldo but he is a very known player and will get his face all over the map in the US.

You're setting the bar low at "non-retard." Why don't we try for something a little bit more sophisticated?

The whole point of Single Entity and having limited DPs is to avoid the "NASL scenario" with or without Beckham.
