I'm just watching The Match on Sky at the moment, and it reminded me of this. I can't believe I didn't have Neville Southall in this poll. I remember discussing with tpmazembe who was the best GK of the 80s somewhere, at the time I said Southall, and I still think that now. What a legend.
lol I just watched that too. Great game. Lol@ Andy gray telling the world Neville was 'theeeeeee best in the wurlddddddd' 454564 times as well.
He was undoubtedly the best shotstopper, arguably the best shot stopper ever. Did you see that save from Anthony Hutton? Unbelievable!
A very good case could be made for Zubizarreta as best goalkeeper of the 80's, and possibly Fillol as well.
Without ever seeing him play, I'd be amazed to find him having the most skill, when you consider the massive difference in training and preparation that keepers have today. Most keepers I've seen play in Yashin's day were total crap compared to the ones I see now. And they were playing for national teams and big clubs. It would probably be more fair to ask who was the best of their own time periods.
they weren't crap, just less specatcular- and i would also be careful trying to block one of those ancient balls.
