And once a player goes to one of the top clubs, his wages are super high and it becomes really hard to unload him. So he might end up bouncing around on various loans for a while but will never really have a settled club situation and his career starts circling the drain ...

Not a big surprise but Onana signed a free agent deal with Inter.

An easy win over Utrecht with all three goals coming in the first half. The second half was a bit of a snooze with Ajax really not getting much in the way of a chance on goal and Utrecht managing only one weak shot on frame that was easily saved by Pasveer. van Axel Dongen came on late for his league debut.

    Player Ratings:

Pasveer (6) - really had nothing to do but look at a handful of shots that were way wide of the goal
Blind (6.5) - enterprising as always with some good passing but had little to defend against
Martinez (6.5) - good to see him recovered from the hamstring problem and he had a decent match
Timber (7) - solid game and good on the ball
Mazraoui (7) - had some good runs up the flank but Ajax really need to sign him to an extension
Alvarez (6) - decent enough but little bothered in the MF by Utrecht
Gravenberch (7) - very good in the first half pushing up the field
    Berghuis (6.5) - solid match
Tadich (6.5) - good match from the Captain
Brobbey (7.5) - two well taken goals and very quick on the press
Antony (7) - got the opener and match winner
Taylor (6) - solid in a substitute role
Klaassen (5.5) - came in to lead the line but had little impact
Schuurs (6) - decent in a sub role for Martinez
    van Axel Dongen (NR)

Cup match coming up on Thursday against lower division Excelsior Maassluis with an away game at PSV next Sunday.

    Nice to have Brobbey back.
I hope Overmars signs him to a long-term contract.
I also hope he gets a shot at Oranje if he keeps scoring

Brobbey is under contract with Leipzig thru 2025 so we’d have to pay a transfer fee to bring him back

It sort of seems inevitable we'll sign Bergwijn at this point however I know Levy's rep is as a tough negotiator and they rumored to be pushing to recoup as much of the original 27 million pounds they invested in him. Curious to know if people who have watched Tottenham recently believe he is a clear upgrade over Neres, who at his best was an effective and often dangerous player for us over the years when fit.

Worst case and this deal falls through, we are left with a few options I can see:
    • Bringing in another experienced wide player? Not sure who else would be on the Ajax shopping list.
    • Putting Berghuis back into his normal position out wide on the right when Antony needs rest and slotting Kudus or Davy into the midfield to replace him as the attacking mid.
    • Giving Daramy more opportunities that I'll be honest I'm not sure he's really ready for given what's at stake (CL knockout rounds and title race).
    Thoughts?

Feels like the ship has sailed on Bergwijn after his heroics today.

Ajax are close to agreement with Juventus for Mo Ihattaren on loan with an option to buy.

Awesome move! I think he'll rediscover his groove at Ajax. Maybe he'll never become the world beater we all hoped for, but I still think he will be at least a very good player for the Eredivisie. Who knows he might still become great!

Ajax were little troubled by lower division Excelsior Maassluis yesterday as they won 9-0. Danilo had four goals and Daramy had two. Van Axel Dongen got the start on LW and earned a PK when he was bundled over in the box. Reeger and Hilynsson both got their first goals for the senior side.

There was a touching moment with two minutes from time as Excelsior substituted Devin Plank, a striker who had just finished chemotherapy for cancer. both teams gathered to create an honor guard which was really a nice thing to do. Full credit to both teams!!!

    Brobbey injured :(
At least he scored and was able to walk off the pitch.

Ajax are pretty much out of strikers now aside from Danilo

Up for debate. Did the ball cross the line in the build up to second goal.

  18. Off course not.
    What line, by the way?

Solid win over a clueless PSV. I don't know why they keep Schmidt on as manager, he is tactically worse than either Cocu or van Bommell. I'll take the win. It should not have been close except for Timber's give away that gave up the goal that tied the match. Mazraoui had a thunderous left footed strike for the match winner that required four minutes of time to decide whether Blind had let the ball get past the sideline. Thankfully VAR upheld the goal. Defensively, Ajax were solid and PSV really didn't have a good shot on target all match long. It was curious that Ajax did not exploit the huge spaces on either side of the field as the three forward PSV players were giving up passes to the FBs. I think Martinez and Timber must have had the most completed passes. None of the MFs figured much though Gravenberch had a couple of good moments deep inside PSV territory.

    Player Ratings:

Pasveer (7) - solid game, made the routine saves and his kicking was good
Blind (6) - woefully slow on defense which is an increasing problem, did well to keep the ball in play on the lead up to the match winner
Martinez (7) - solid game defending
Timber (6.5) - had a really good game except for the lost ball that led to the goal
Mazraoui (7.5) - what a rocket of a shot for the match winner
Alvarez (7.5) - other the the YC, he was rock solid disrupting play in the MF
Gravenberch (6) - ho hum match
Berghuis (6) - had a good free kick early on but figured little in the game
Tadic (7) - kept good control of the ball and created some good options offensively
Brobbey (6.5) - had a good match until the injury and though he could only jump off one foot got the first goal
Antony (7) - really did a nice job of controlling the ball and tracked back all game to help out on defense
Danilo (6) - OK as a substitute and was decent with the ball
Klaassen (6) - added some good defense coming in for Gravenberch
    Rensch (NR) - on late

Ajax move to the top of the table now and are off next weekend. Heracles are up next with a cup match against Vitesse quickly thereafter.

It looked like it did. But VAR has to be 100% sure and it just wasnt conclusive enough

Quite right and the angles that were shown here in the US were inconclusive. One showed the ball in play, the other possibly not.

Eredivisie need sideline technology like EPL goalline technology which can see directly over the sideline instead of from the side. But to do that for every eredivisie team supposedly is not cheap, thats why we dont have it yet

I don't think there is any league in the world that has sideline technology. It would be so infrequently used. this is the first time I can ever remember a controversy in the lead up to a goal with this kind of question.

  24. Well, the last time with Ajax was that famous ball against Real, that also lead to a goal and iirc the turning point of the match.
