I thought about as I wrote it. Also, he had the ponytail, which made for the "iconic" image. It is a tough thing about team sports' failures. It is the last failure that is remembered, not the myriad of incidents up to that point that influenced the outcome.
Oh, I remember a lot of England’s suckitude this tournament, not just the last! I’m sorry you like them, by the way, as I don’t like taunting you but I also have to give England their due.
No problem. Not like I take any of this seriously! I don't feel taunted at all. You know I am a realist more than anything. England is not my favorite team at all, but my two "favorites" (Poland, then Germany) crapped out early. The others are Czech Republic and Croatia and then any underdog. For me, it is often more about who to root against (Brazil, Mexico, Spain, Portugal, Greece-still mad at them for the awful 2004 Euro win) than who I support. Why I have an irrational dislike for Portugal, I have no idea. Supporting any team usually ends in disappointment. Come on, we're still Chicago Fire fans, after all! I fully expected England to crap out about the round of 16. Figured they would make it out of the group, since it was the second weakest group, even if it had three teams I really like (and Scotland, although I having nothing against Scotland). Italy's group with Wales, Switzerland and Turkey was weaker. Also, I was pretty harsh on England after the Croatia match and, especially, after the awful, awful Scotland match. The suckitude was very high in that match. I will say that 4th in the World Cup 2018 and runner-up in Euro 2020/2021 is pretty damned good for this very young (and rather sucky) English team. Especially after the humiliation of losing to Iceland in Euro 2016, which was awesome, by the way. Yeah, I don't take any of this seriously.
I'm sure it took a massive effort to play 120 minutes in triple digit heat on one leg. You want successful penalties too?!?!?!
Trinidad looked unusually weak against El Salvador tonight. Perhaps the "lil sumpin'" Jack Warner kept coming made a difference when taken away.
Well, you mention "Trinidad" but not "Tobago." How are they supposed to play with only half a team? They draw against Mexico and lose to El Salvador? Wow, as a federation, CONCACAF sucks (almost as much as the EPL). Two teams in the top 40 Mexico-11 US-20 Next- Jamaica-45 Costa Rica-50 When Montserrat (with a population of about 5,000) is only the 10th worst team in the Federation, you know something is wrong. [Yes, I know, basically the entire team consists of lower league English players] Teams with lower FIFA rankings that Montserrat: 178 Puerto Rico 180 Montserrat 181 Cuba 188 Dominica 194 Cayman Islands 201 Bahamas 205 Aruba 206 Turks and Caicos Islands 207 US Virgin Islands 208 British Virgin Islands 209 Anguilla (coached by former MLS and T & T legend Stern John)
1st watched Canada smoke Haiti. Now the USA is leading Martinique (as it should) 2 - 0 in the 31st minute.
When I’m a neutral, I tend to root against teams that play defensive, boring soccer or teams who have arrogant fan bases who consistently overestimate their teams’ accomplishments.
That may actually have been the start of my irrational dislike for Portugal. I don't think they registered at all previously. Good point.
I looked, as well and thought the same thing. Then I figured this out. It is on the Steel City FC website: https://steelcityfc.org/ The Steel City website is atrocious, but it did have this funny statement about tonight's game: July 17, 2021 Steel City FC vs. Chicago House AC This friendly features Chicago House AC, the first ever professional soccer team to play in the south suburbs. Really? What about, I don't know, the Chicago Fire? What about the Red Stars?
