The Face of a Democrat, and a Liar Written by John Armor On 26 September the Associated Press ran the photograph below on its wire service, with the titles, “Thousands Protest the Iraq War,” and “Jeb Eddy joins thousands of demonstrators to protest the war in Iraq on Saturday.” This photo was taken by Noah Berger, who presumably also obtained the information for the cut lines run with the photo. The impression of Mr. Eddy, his sign, and the AP photograph of both, is that Mr. Eddy is a disgruntled Republican. This impression is a deliberate lie, which the AP should have caught. A Google search finds a Jeb Eddy, software writer and author in Palo Alto. A search of Federal Election Commission records shows that Mr. Eddy made the following political contributions: to John Kerry for President, $250 on 5/23/04, and six contributions to the Democrat National Committee of either $250 or $500 between 9/25/98 and 2/25/04. Mr. Eddy may LOOK like the false image of a Republican – older, white, wealthy male, with a craggy face that’s been out in the sun, and the touch of silver in his hair. But he is no such thing. He is a Democrat. He’s pretended to be a disgruntled Republican before, in a demonstration joined to a speech by House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi in the San Francisco Library to attack President Bush’s proposals for Social Security reform, in February. SFGate.com reported Eddy as saying: “ ‘This is one of the most visible ways in which the Republicans are misleading America,’ said Jeb Eddy of Palo Alto, who carried a sign proclaiming that he was ‘ashamed’' of the GOP on the topic.” That article then referred to “Margaret Garvin of San Francisco, another registered Republican.” While this author doesn’t know the bona fides of Ms. Gavin, this reference suggests that Eddy represented himself as a registered Republican. Or, perhaps the reporters have the personal view that Republicans should be trashed on public issues, and that a photograph of a disgruntled Republican is an excellent way to accomplish the desired result. In any event, the reporters did not check him out. And since Mr. Eddy has played this game before, it seems he is counting on the press not to do its job, and help him get away with his public lies. So, look at this face. It is the face of Democrat dishonesty. It is also the face of complicity of the press in promoting the lie, by not bothering to check out the truth of the “facts” of the person in the photo.
That's sneaky, dishonest, and underhanded. It's also pretty clever. Who's going to doubt that some old white guy isn't a Reep?
Um, where's the proof that this gentleman is not a registered Republican? Just the donations? You realize that you don't need to be registered as a member of one political party in order to donate to that party, right? My wife is registered as a Republican, but she donated to the DNC last year.
Hundreds of thousands turn out to protest the policies of this administration, and you counter with this. Makes me proud to be a left wing dissenter.
Why stop just at '98 with his contributions? Did the reporter look back further, but find that indeed the guy has been a Reep for most of his life? I'd imagine many moderate Reeps prefer the right wing DLC type Democrats to the neo-con/fundie alliance that has taken over their party--thus he could still consider himself a Republican even while temporarily supporting the Dems.
What is the evidence that the Jeb Eddy in the picture is the Jeb Eddy who donated to Democratic politicians. I did a Google search for Ian McCracken and was surprised to find out the our Ian McCracken has been all over this country/world!!!!
When I saw the subject of the thread, I thought I was going to open a link to a big smiling picture of Zell "spit balls" Miller.
I am also a Registered Republican whose conservative economic stances have made me stand against Bush since day 1. I wasn't happy voting for Al Gore, and I wasn't happy voting for John Kerry, but I would rather eat steel wool topped with Ajax than vote for Bush. What Ian has posted is pure speculation until it is proved what party he is a registered member of, it means jack squat [I'm not saying JE is a Republican, simply pointing out that a conclusion cannot be drawn in this case based on presented evidence]. Conservatives should not be happy with this President, and the fact that someone from the GOP doesn't toe the line and support Bush does not mean they're not a Republican.
Just to clarify, I voted for Kerry and I didn't say the guy wasn't a Republican (though I'm sure he's not). No, I said he doesn't look like a software developer. Jeez, you guys take this board much too seriously.

So...this is your proof that the count for peace demonstrators was indeed only several hundred? Still waiting on that one.

Mmm, that's good protestor. Steve Gilliard's blog is one of many which took that very list and said "OMG WTF", or words to that effect. Say what you want about the Republicans - and I plan to - but you didn't see any Flat Tax Now! signs at the Terri Schiavo campout. Hell, you didn't even see any giant pictures of abortions at Bush campaign rallies. The bad guys stay on message, yes.
