In my opinion, in person experience would build do a better job in building your brand than TV and would be okay if they wanted to keep some of that in place.
Right, but if they are getting better ticket sales regularly, they need to consider the TV as a way to help build the brand. It can only help with the demand. Who knows, in 5 years, Crew tickets might be the hot ticket in town.
As a (forced) TWC subscriber in the "Old Insight Area" it still sucks if they stay on TWC. The SD is awful. Not ONN awful, but not too far off. I ended up shelling out for MLSLive and driving to Mexico to use it last year. I bet I end up in the same place. Please dump TWC. Please!
Shawn Mitchell @smitchcd 7m7 minutes ago No surprise, but can confirm Fox Sports Ohio will not revive its relationship with #CrewSC. Shawn Mitchell @smitchcd 6m6 minutes ago Sources close to FSO said there were preliminary talks with #CrewSC but club's asking price was too high and discussions never progressed. Patrick Guldan @GuldanMR 4m4 minutes ago Patrick Guldan Retweeted Shawn Mitchell Now that’s fascinating. #CrewSC starting to get value out of the product.
WCQ is almost here and will be well underway at the end of this season. Several games with stage bleachers last year and talk about doing so again this year.
I feel it's important to note that what you quoted was Guldan, not me - for some reason there's an extra space in there.
WWCD, The Blitz, WMNI, and a few others do not pay Nielsen for the Radio Ratings. How do the salesmen sell time without listener counts. WWCD was such a valuable partner to the team last year! They have been very careful to make sure their website did not show a Crew SC logo on the home page.
Many of the local stations no longer subscribe to get ratings. I don't believe that WSNY nor WLVQ get the ratings either yet they are still able to negotiate with advertisers.
And yet they still had two of the best attended seasons in team history with the worst TV deal in sports. Clearly the TV was awful but it did not hurt them at the gate like everyone on here said it would.
And that confirms what I always thought about FSO--they were not offering much. Mind you, the Crew may well have been asking too much, but it now seems someone is willing to pay. I think one has two factors here why the Crew might (we don't know for sure yet) have gotten a better deal. The increased attendance and the on-field success of the team. Both could only have been an asset in negotiations.
Because they were winning. Imagine if other people in the market would have known that by getting their feet wet by seeing a game on a bar TV at BDubs.
I completely agree but the team was still visible to people. I just don't know how much the TV deal really mattered to anyone outside of the hardcore fans. I will say that it brings a degree of creditability with casual fans to see the product on a channel like FSO that people relate with the Cavs, Reds, Indians, CBJ, etc. More than a few times in the FSO era, I have been in bars outside of Columbus hearing people asking questions while watching and curious about the team.
Which is why the FSO deal was fun while it lasted, but a Crew deal isn't popular enough for them to prioritize. The new deal will be better than the last deal. But people refuse to believe that the last deal may have legitimately been the best option available at the time.
Now, what if Columbus had a full-time feed for FS Ohio like Cincinnati and Cleveland do? Obviously, the CBJ get bumped in Cleveland for Cavs games and they get bumped in Cleveland for the few Reds conflicts there are. If there was a FSOH-COL, it would give priority to CBJ and Crew games in Central Ohio, bumping Reds and Cavs to the alternate channels in the local TV footprint. FSOH-CLE would show Crew games, bumping them for Cavs games. FSOH-CIN would show Reds games with Crew and CBJ being bumped. FSOH-COL would show Crew/CBJ games with the other two teams being bumped. Obviously, FS Ohio doesn't think the CBJ warrant a channel and Crew games aren't on their radar at all. I think one of the best deals (at the time) was the short-lived Columbus Sports Network. Had that worked, we could have had replays, pregame shows, postgame shows, magazine-style shows and who knows what else...all OTA and on several different providers. Sadly, BTN essentially killed CSN.
I was at Applebee's last night and my waitress had good information from her sources on what the hold up on the deal is. Apparently the Crew is pushing for HD broadcasts, but all potential broadcast partners are insisting on standard definition to protect their brand, and customers, when the Crew wears their "For Columbus" jerseys. She was hopeful that this can be resolved by mid-season.

I heard that secret meeting are taking place with Applebees to show the Crew games on closed circuit from all of their restaurants around the world in order to expand the club's reach.
