I know I may lose my membership in the hipster club here, but the new albums by The Dixie Chicks and Kelly Willis are pretty excellent.

I'm normally not a fan of what passes for country these days on the radio, but these discs both seem to be made without regard for current country or pop trend, and seem all the more original for it. They definately aren't Faith Hill corny or Martina McBride faux-earnest, but sound like records made by people who have record collections that reach beyond Nashville and Celine Dion territory. However, both records are hooky enough that pop programmers would be nuts not to give them a shot on hit radio.

Anyone else hear this stuff yet?

A couple nights ago I heard someone on the radio (think it was Will Hermes) give the new Dixie Chicks a great review - basically saying that its one of the best pop records of the year.

I know of Kelly Willis from her self-titled album from what, almost 10 years ago? There's just not a single weak track on it, and several really great ones; if more playlisted country music was authentic and heartfelt and un-corny as her stuff, I might just listen to more country. As I've told Footix before, I'd listen to Kelly Willis sing the phone book.

I like the new Dixie Chicks album.

Never been able to stomach Kelly Willis, though.

I'm just glad the thread is aptly named. Most of the stuff that passes for country music these days is pop music with twang.

Well some say I’m not country
and that’s just fine with me
Cause I don’t wanna be country
with some faggot looking over at me
And they say that I’m ill-mannered
    that I’m gonna self destruct
But if you know what Im thinkin’
you’ll know that pop country really sucks.

Well I’m here to put the Dick in Dixie
and the cunt back in country
Cause the kind of country I hear now days
is a bunch of shit to me
And they say that I’m ill-mannered
    that I’m gonna self-destruct
But if you know what I’m thinkin’
you’ll know that pop country really sucks.

Well they’re losing all the outlaws
that had to stand their ground
And they’re being replaced by these kids
    from a manufactured town
And they don’t have no idea
    bout sorrow and woe
Cause they’re all just too damn busy
    kissin’ ass on Music Row

Well I’m here to put the Dick in Dixie
and the cunt back in country
Cause the kind of country I hear nowdays
is a bunch of shit to me
And they say that I’m ill-mannered
    that I’m gonna self-destruct
But if you know what I’m thinkin’
you’ll know that pop country really sucks.

And if you know what I’m thinkin’
you’ll know that pop country really sucks.

    - Dwight Yoakam- love him

    - The Mavericks- not to familiar with them but have liked what I've heard

    - Jimmy Dale Gilmore- a used-to-be-great. He's living off his reputation now, but hell, he deserves it.
