Looking for a few good fanatics.

For the few of you that don’t know, I’ve been a member of the Casbah since the 1998 season and leader of it for at least the final three seasons (I’ve lost track of when I officially was given the keys…old age). I decided back in 2005 that I was ready to hand it off to someone else no matter what happened to the team that season.

Well, after a two-year vacation it’s time for this Godfather to step aside and let another capo (I’d actually prefer capos) run the family. I’ll offer my experience, my wisdom, and most importantly my contacts to help this be as smooth a transition as possible.

If you’re interested in helping, come find me personally at the Brit on Thursday and give me your contact info, you can PM me, or e-mail me by the links if you click on my username. I don’t get PM or thread notifications due to some glitch, so if you PM me, it might be a couple days before I notice.

I will not respond to any non-PM replies here on BigSoccer. Why? It’s too easy for someone who doesn’t want to do the actual work to make suggestions. I do my work with real names and real faces. I learn a lot more about people with an actual conversation and a handshake than with the bluster people type anonymously on this board.

Anyone interested can contact me. I don’t care where you come from, who you sleep with (or not sleep with), what your age is, or your ability to juggle. As long as you ain’t Alexi Lalas or Tim Leiweke you’re welcome to help rebuild.

As for me, I will be around, just not as much, however, you can bet your ass that when I am around, it'll be in the Casbah.
(Oh yeah, I reserve the right to have the first drumbeat in the new stadium) :)

    Oooooo, San Jose (boom, boom)

    Guy --

Thanks for all your great work leading the Casbah in the past. I probably would not be a Quakes fan were it not for the amazing atmosphere the Casbah generated for the entire stadium.

I hope we are able to get lots of folks willing to answer your call to help carry the mantle. The Casbah is critical for the success of the re-born Quakes. I will help anyway I can, including purchasing a pair of "seats" in whatever section of whatever stadium the Casbah may be in so that I will always have a place there.

HERE WE GO! HERE WE GO! HERE WE GO!

Guy's leadership will be sorely missed. I'll never forget the look on my friend's face when Guy, obviously frustrated with our quietude during a losing effort against the Colorado Rapids, turned around, yelled "God*amnit!" and started berating everyone in the Casbah for being silent. That has to be one of my all-time favorite memories of Guy and the Casbah. :D

Garber has mentioned that they want to have fan groups create atmosphere in new MLS stadia. The Earthquakes (almost said EQLLC out of habit :^) ) also want that, so I am hopeful that the front office will want to assist however they can.
Will it still be "Casbah"? I sort of like Goodspot's Wolff Pack... though that is tied to an individual's name rather than a team identity. I will leave that to minds wiser than mine.

The Casbah got history...The Wolfpack is also good, using a single f would distance it somewhat from Lews person.

While The Wolff Pack does sound nice, I agree that for the sake of longevity, the group should either remain named The Casbah or be named something earthquake-centric like The Tremors (unless the women's pro soccer team is called the San Jose Tremors) or The Aftershocks. :)

    GO SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES!!!

Yeh like i said in another welcome back quakes thread, i never understood why when the Clash became the Earthquakes the supporter's group remained the Casbah. Now its a new quakes, new time, etc. I don't know about you but I thought rhe Tremors would be good as in "Tremors were felt throughout the Bay Area after the Earthquake's latest victory." And the section of the Epicenter where the Tremors stand could be dubbed.....The Richter Scale, what else?!

    :p

I prefer to keep it The Casbah. If you're always renaming things to try to stay relevant, you can't build tradition. There are lots of names in sports that require some explaining. That just says history.

Well bro, good luck to you--might be time to hang out with the Geritol gang of Bill, Jay, and the like at the more sedate seats. :D

It would be time to hand the reins over to a younger person. The only credo is to still preserve the tradition where we welcome one and all who is a Quakes fanatico.

I know we did explore the possibility of a name change a few years ago but since we will soon be back in operation this is an opportunity to decide to continue with the traditional name, or rebrand ourselves as someone else.

However, this capo is better set on the sidelines. I would publicly recommend another one, Noah Elliott, if he wants it! :D

I would like to see the Aftershocks name return since that was the moniker in the old NASL days. But so as long as we're back in the biz it's all great.

I agree... why a supporter group of the Quakes is the Casbah doesn't have to seen logical to everyone. It makes sense if you were there and know the club history that's good enough. The new fans will learn why it's that way from those that have been around longer.

Actually, in my case it's more like "I'm too nearsighted to see the other end of the field very well, so maybe I should sit more towards the middle."

Of course, if Geritol would help with that...

I agree the name Casbah is great, and the history behind it is worthy of remembering.

However I think multiple supporters' sections would be a good thing, so for names I'll throw out "The Seismic Zone"

Hopefully next season The Casbah will have a "1906 Supporters Brigade" from SF coming to the games!

    It should remain the Casbah.

    - The fans have been there since the start, and it pays homage to San Jose's role as a founding member of MLS

    - It's in reference to the Clash, an ass-kicking band

    - I think it's cool because it no longer makes sense...it gives the name mystique :)

    - It's a reminder to us fans that we have supported and will support the team, even during lean years and day-glo uniforms

And while I appreciate the opinions of outsiders, this is a decision that should be made exclusively by San Jose fans.

FYI: there were a couple Cashbah references in today's USA Today article about the return of the Quakes to MLS:

I'd like to see the Casbah cover the entire north end (or whatever end it will be in the new stadium) somewhat like the fans do in Jay's and my favorite team in J-League, Urawa Reds. :)

No multiple sections - we want unity, not the crap they serve in LA... BTW it is and always be the Casbah!!!
