Absolutely astonished nobody has mentioned Spaten Optimator yet. Deeeeeeeelicious doppelbock. Really easy to find, too. Check it out. http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/142/99
It's pretty good and a plus is that it's available at Trader Joes. I don't often go for a doppelbock but when I do I go for the Sam Adams Imperial or my brewing friend's bock which is very tasty (and free!). I do like the Spaten though.
I am so so glad that I have been able to influence you for the better. Welcome to my world Mr B As for the Sculpin you posted on my wall, great beer - bet the cask version is tasty too.
Ugh, don't get me started on this. Our Trader Joe's don't carry alcohol. I hear that their "two buck chuck" wines are fantastic for the price, but I can't get at 'em.
its sooo weird to hear retail beer/alcohol stores where i live, the only place you can buy that stuff is from THE GOVERNMENT OF CANADA
There are states like that in the US as well... Ohio, for example. I went out there for a convention one year, and you could buy beer/wine just about everywhere, but you had to buy any hard liquor from a store with a very simple, direct sign, "STATE-RUN LIQUOR AGENCY". There was one, and only one, in the entire city of Colombus.
Nobody does blue laws like Pennsylvania. Guess that happens when you're founded as a Quaker community. You couldn't buy alcohol on Sundays until 2003. Even now you have to wait until 11am. All alcohol are sold at "State Stores" and beer from "Distributors". State stores run on government hours meaning they usually are closed by 5pm on weekdays and 6 on weekends. You can't buy more than 2 six packs from a bar in one transaction. You can't buy more than 2 cases from a distributor in one transactions.
A good friend of mine owns a liquor store in Oklahoma, and he's got the same thing, no sales on Sundays. But the bible belters take it a bit further. An "intoxicating beverage" is defined as something with >=3.2% ABV. "intoxicating beverages" are sold at liquor stores, and "supermarket beers" are sold at supermarkets. There can be no crossing of the two types, meaning, that if a beer is made in the 3.2% ABV version, the brewer cannot legally sell the full-proof version to liquor stores. That means, no Bud, no Coors, no Miller, etc etc at liquor stores. Fine, who drinks that swill anyway? The problem comes with the other brands that those brands own. Budweiser InBev owns Spaten, so no Optimator or Franziskaner in liquor stores. It's all "supermarket beer". Diageo, with all the brands they own. Can't be sold in the versions we know. It's all 3.2% ABV or less near beer. Oh, and they can't get Yuengling there at all, either. And they just a few years ago got Sam Adams. It's like an alcoholic third world country.
Have you ever had Nigerian Guinness? Guinness changes the brew for the local markets and the Nigerian version is like extremely alcoholic Horlicks (Horlicks is a malt bed time drink sold in the UK)
This World Cup I have mainly been drinking: The Belgian Ales - Fruity and summery - Hogaarden with a slice, etc. Some Stell Artois to clean the palette bewteen brews. I have also been enjoying - The Flying Fish Summer ale http://www.flyingfish.com/beers/seasonals.html South Africa, Chenin blanc - simple summer white wine Some delightful Sangiovese and a little Rioja (so done with Malbec and Merlot) and Pimms - ginger ale, mint and limes Sticky summer and I have been very thirsty
Well for you people in OK, you need to learn how to make your own brew. It's not hard. There are several sites out there to get you started. All you need is Malt, Barley, Hops, Water, & yeast. I am sure in OK you can get those materials together. Here is a kewl site to get you started on making your own home brews.
