It means "Agony of Doha" or "Tragedy of Doha".

On October 28, 1993, Japan played the final match of the qualifiers for the 1994 World Cup against Iraq in Doha. Needing a win to qualify for its first ever WC Finals, Japan led 2-1 going into stoppage time. However, Iraq scored in the dying moments, tying the match and allowing South Korea to qualify.

It was one of the lowest moments in Japanese soccer, but it helped serve as motivation for qualifying for the 1998 World Cup.

[edited-KF]. the mighty japan will fully complete its vengeance when they squash iraq in the next wcq. squashing them in asia cup 2000 wasn't good enough at all.

It doesn't hurt that much any more because we've recovered and we might be better for having suffered the Higeki. But we'll always remember it. People in Texas remember the Alamo. Soccer fans in Japan remember Doha.

Thanks to that match, Korea went to the United States. It was pretty hectic for both sides, I suppose.

BTW, did KAZU go to '98?

nope, he was dropped by the coach at the last moment for some reason (any of you japanese guys know why? Was he really in a slump?) and it was quite a big story since he the most proven striker in Japan back then. Instead Japan went in with Shoji Jo and Gon Nakayama as strikers, and they had some awful misses against Argentina, Croatia and Jamaica. Who knows if Kazu was there, he might of finished couple of those chances...

I remember back in the day I was scared when Korea played Japan because of Kazu ('97) and Maezono ('95). Speaking of Zono, he got dropped to Anyang's second team. Was a talented guy but now just an average foootie player in the K-League. How sad.

Really sad. He was the best Japanese player on the '96 Olympic team. It's funny, Hide Nakata says that back then, the two best Japanese players he had ever seen were Maezono and Shoji Jo. Look at where they are now.

About Kazu at the 1998 World Cup, I can't remember if he was recovering from injury but I have heard that he was a bad influence on the team. Still, it was painful watching Jo miss chance after chance and I remember wishing Kazu was out there.

But like many of the players at Doha, Kazu wasn't as good as the media made him out to be. They were stars because they happened to be the best Japanese players when soccer was becoming a big time sport.

you didn't hear what happened to her? ah ah ah, funniest story ever!

So she went to the US with her boyfriend (who is a host), and they decided to smuggle back like 5 kilos of marijuana in their luggage. But Marijuana smells really bad so they sprayed the hell out of it with perfume. So when they are going through customs in Japan there is this horrible smell, they open the baggage and bam, 5 kilos of Marijuana! ha ha ha!

The authorities said that most people at least try to hide it in fake luggage bottoms, but that they just packed it in like everything else, and that they were quite possibly the dumbest smugglers ever. So now I think she is waiting to be tried for smuggling narcotics, and will probably be going to prison.

I wonder if they are gonna do any of those prison flicks with her now! :p
