In normal times this cycle would be underway but because of Covid it isn’t yet. Just starting this now so we can put together who we think is the pool for the next u23 cycle. Hot takes encouraged

Maybe someone could set the pool for us, maybe the consensus top 14-15 players at each position. Thanks in advance!

For this u23 cycle I think there are a few tiers we should categorize players in. Keep in mind that we are projecting out 3.5 years from now so we’ll be way off.

The first tier is full strength locks. These are players that you’d feel confident that even 3 years from now would make a full strength u23 roster:
    Gio Reyna
    Yunus Musah
    Folarin Balogun

The second tier is full strength contenders. This is the rest of what you consider to be the “core” of the team. These are guys who aren’t quite locks down the road but are likely within the top 2-3 options for their position:
    George Bello
    Jonathan Gomez
    Bryan Okoh
    Owen Otasowie
    Caden Clark
    Uly Llanez
    Malick Sanogo
    Ricardo Pepi

The third tier is players who are in the pool but haven’t done enough for you to confidently say that they’re going to be in the top 2-3 for their position in 2024. This could be guys who could very well contend for starting spots but are in a very contested position currently or players who may be just outside of the top 2-3 options for their position:
    David Ochoa (GK)
    Chituru Odunze
    Damian Las
    Alex Borto
    Travian Sousa (LB)
    Anthony Sorenson
    Justin Che (RCB)
    Antonio Leone
    Brandan Craig
    Nico Carrera
    Leo Sepulveda (LCB)
    Hayden Sargis
    Casey Walls
    Johnny Cardoso (6)
    Aidan Morris
    Sebastian Berhalter
    Leon Flach
    Gianluca Busio
    Kobe Hernandez Foster
    Daniel Leyva
    Allan Rodriguez
    Tanner Tessmann (8)
    Cole Bassett
    Bryang Kayo
    Moses Nyeman
    Alex Alvarado
    Jose Gallegos (10)
    Evan Rotundo
    Quinn Sullivan
    Konrad De La Fuente (wingers)
    Cam Harper
    Alex Mighten
    Matko Milijevic
    Dante Sealy
    Kevin Paredes
    Cade Cowell
    Patrick Leal
    Fabrizio Bernal
    Matthew Hoppe (9)
    Santiago Muñoz
    Ruben Hernandez
    Patrick Weah

Almost every player listed so far is someone who I expected to not be released by their clubs but if I had to pick a 18-23 man roster here is my shortlist

For this cycle the positions of notable depth are the GK’s, 6’s, 8’s, and left wingers. These are positions that I think overall are stronger than what we have in our current u23’s. Even with our best options not available these positions will be just fine.

These positions have good talent at the higher end of the depth charts but have noticeable drop offs after our top 2-3 players: RB, LB, 10, striker. I’m hopeful that we have a lot of players really breakthrough in these spots but at the u23 level the leftovers still in MLS will be good enough.

These positions worry me: center backs, right wing. For the CB’s we are really, really thin. We have players who should be serviceable but if we went up against the top countries I’d be really nervous with the players that we currently have. For our right wingers I’m not as worried because natural left wingers can easily play on the right but our wingers who prefer to play on the right are really thin.

The early look ~ best 23:

GK: David Ochoa, Chituri Odunze, Chris Brady
    RB: Bryan Reynolds, Joe Scally
    CB: Justin Che, Julian Araujo
    CB: Owen Otasowie, George Campbell
    (Not counting Okoh for now)
    LB: George Bello, Leon Flach
    M6: Johnny Cardoso, Tanner Tessman
    M8: Yunus Musah, Gianluca Busio
    10: Gio Reyna, Cole Bassett
    RW: Caden Clark, Uly Llanez
LW: Konrad de la Fuente, Cade Cowell
    FW: Matthew Hoppe, Ricardo Pepi

Note: It’s amazing how poor our center back position is at this level. I had to move Otasowie to center back (and I think he’s almost more of an #8), Julian Araujo from right back, and I just took a guess. Hopefully someone emerges. And hopefully, Okoh commits. Either way, I expect this is where we use our overage players.

Note: I feel okayish everywhere else on the field.

Note: Obviously, I know that many of these players won’t be available. But I’m just listing our best possible 23 for reference sake.

I don't think the centerback position in this pool is poor; its just a position that becomes clearer in more years. Its early. Most fans probably hadn't heard of Justin Che until two weeks ago (not on this board). So CBs will emerge. We just don't know who they are.

Four years ago who the hell had heard of Henry Kessler?

Compared to the previous cycle it’s 100% poor. The 01’s CB‘s are straight up bad. The only good one is Owen Otasowie who is trying not to be a CB. The 02’s are a little bit better with Nico Carrera, Jonathan Tomkinson, Jansen Miller and Hayden Sargis but again none of these guys are at the level of EPB or CCV were at this age. So our two oldest age groups are really lacking so far.

Our 03/04 pool give us some better options with Bryan Okoh, Justin Che, Casey Walls, Antonio Leone, Brandan Craig, and Jalen Neal. These guys are solid but with young CB’s their trajectories could go anywhere. But if we don’t secure Bryan Okoh then we will have some serious issues.

The 97-00’s had a fairly good CB pool with Richards, McKenzie, EPB, CCV, Miles Robinson, Glad, Pines, and Trusty. Even with the europe guys not involved I’m still confident with this group’s CB’s. With the next u23 cycle I can’t say the same. But then we immediately turnaround with a strong CB pool for the 05-07’s so it isn’t going to be something that will plague the USMNT like our striker and LB’s do now.

With no WCQ'ing, this would be the Olympics to send your best team. You can even send Pulisic, McKennie, Adams as overage players. It depends on club releases, but you can trade the Olympics for the Gold Cup. Plus, these players will have some pull at their clubs and probably will be well established.

The games will be on at a reasonable time and will be based in Europe, where all our top players will likely be playing.

If you want a Gold Medal, this is the shot.

Sadly sending the best players isn’t up to Ussoccer. Even with the games being in Europe the clubs will still likely be stingy with who gets released. It’s just how they are

I’m not sure we’d bring Adams and McKennie for this team. I’d imagine we’d need a CB, GK, and Pulisic

Sure. CB is a strength in this cycle. Its night and day compared to the 2016 cycle.
[For the 2015 U23 CONCACAF Championships we had to call CCV waaaaaaaaaay up in age groups. Brooks hadn't committed yet.]
For the 2020 cycle, CB looked like a real strength four years ago because of the depth being built up.
Some succeeded. Some didn't or haven't yet (like say Danny Barbir).

It doesn't appear to be as good this upcoming cycle, but that doesn't mean it'll be "bad."

We have to expect every cycle to have different strengths and weaknesses.

A year from now we'll know more about the trajectories of the 02s and 03s.

Hopefully this does not become a topic we focus on too much until August. I am going to postpone assessing this cycle until we complete the current one.

The one aspect I'd like is for this 2024 cycle to start right away.
Hire a coach, etc. if Kreis isn't continuing.

A lot of these players are the guys that missed out on the cancelled U20 cycle, so I'd like to provide them with some opportunities.
A bunch are with the full USMNT, but then there are others that aren't.

No it is not. But think of the position USSF is in. They could call, for example, Pulisic to the Gold Cup. Make him come all the way to USA for three weeks. Or they could tell Chelsea, "how about instead he goes to Paris for three weeks?" The events basically overlap but without intercontinental travel.

I think any European team would opt to keep the player in Europe. Plus, the officiating and physical toll in the Olympics will be less than the Concafery going on over here. Would you prefer your player playing the German U23 team with La Liga or Ligue 1 refs or Honduras with refs from Bermuda?

Slight correction: in normal times, the 24-month period of time in which we all griped about why the cycle isn't underway would be underway, until finally the USSF threw together a few slapdash camps.

I appreciate the thorough and entirely reasonable lists put forward by @David Kerr and @Eleven Bravo. They always serve as interesting benchmarks as the cycle progresses and the player pool evolves. It never fails to be remarkable how much things can change over 3-4 years. We could all post projected rosters and any of us would be extremely fortunate to even get 50% of the names right.

Yup. All folks need to do is look at the first couple of roster predictions from the 2020 Olympic cycle thread.
We are sure to be wrong on a lot of this. There's a lot of volatility.
Its why I'm not so keen on making definitive statements right now about a particular position in the group 4 years from now.

I learn a lot about who’s who on these forums. For example, from @David Kerr list, I can tell there are a number of players I need to look into.

I think we can feel confident that Bello, Reynolds, Johnny, Araujo, Tessman, Busio, Musah, Reyna, Bassett, Clark, Hoppe, and a few others are going to be solid pros, but it’s pretty much anyone’s guess sometimes with prospects.

Nonetheless, it’s still fun and interesting to make predictions.

Our future top CBs are just getting excited of obtaining college scholarships. The biggest issue with that position is cleaning dead wood. The same with keepers.

If someone got 50% of the names right that would be insane. I’d ask what heaven was like because only god would be able to get that many players right

Projecting 3-4 years out should always be taken with a grain of salt. We’re going to be wrong but damn it’s fun to do it anyways. For the truly elite talents it’s easy to say they’ll keep on their track in this type of time period but it’s the prospects who are a tier below that will have tons of fluctuation. I enjoy the usynt day trading life

The other thing we need to predict is how many posts this thread will have by the time the 2024 Olympics actually begin.

I pledge to do my part to pump up the stats.
