team names (rumors, suggestions, etc)

    I was culling the mlsrumors email and someone from the inside supposedly, states that the name for Philadelphia will be Philadelphia Independence FC. IF you now go to the philadelphiaindependencefc.com website its picture has been changed from the generic one to one with kids playing soccer such as was on MLSinSeattle.com and MLSinPhiladelphia.com

    if this is the case, and i hope not because im not a big fan of the name, then i hope they use it like teams use 'united,' never referring to the team as "the independence"

    In speaking with Nick last night he told me that a name was yet to be determined. They had some things in mind, but the team name does not exist yet. That does not explain the domain registration, however, other than buying it up to have it just in case.

    That's the same false front as mlsinphilly.com, but not the same as mlsphilly2010.com

    I could live with Independence...but it's just there...A name that long would ensure a nickname really quickly...It's hard to create 9 syllable chants...one more and we could just sing in iambic pentameter

    As fars as short nicknames go, would they not be the Ben's, as we are the Sons of Ben? Or am I that last to the party that it's been discussed on another thread?

    Either Philadelphia Independence or Philadelphia Independence FC as the team's official name sounds pretty cool, I suppose. :cool:

    In any case, it's certainly better than the now over-suggested (among all the expansion candidates) [City name] FC or [Nickname] FC. Having FC Dallas and Toronto FC are fine, but more teams in the league with that naming format would be too much.

    Hopefully we'll find out soon, as we reportedly will with Seattle's MLS team (hopefully to be officially named Seattle Sounders).

    How many MLS teams (other than the Earthquakes v2.0) were announced immediately with a name?


    Answer: None.


    Based on this precedent, I don't see a Philadelphia name being announced this week. The announcement in itself is an event, the naming of the team is yet another event, and a positive way for the team to remain in the news 12-18 months from now.

    The team has 24 months of PR time to fill, so there's no reason to use all the bullets now.

    If the name is indeed the Independence, a start for a nickname could just be as simple as The Pens...Come on you Pens! Or not :)

    If it ends up being Indepedence...meh. I would rather it be something more traditional, and by the voting I can see that I am not alone.

    We could call ourselves the "Indies" and maybe we could invite Robert Redford to games, the season opening press conference could be at the Sundance Film Festival and we could show our games on "IFC" with lots of hand held camera shots and film noire lighting. The possibilities are endless.
