Golden State was adopted because the Warriors didn't want to say they were in Oakland. When they move back to San Francisco, I expect they'll renew the old "The City" moniker. Beyond that, no it makes zero sense because the state is too big. Local is important.
Not too mention that there's a very strong rivalry between northern and southern California. So the all inclusive name would be pointless
FC Los Angeles or Los Angeles FC Can we -please- for the love of god get away from the silly mascot names.
Exactly. Love the team. Hate (and always have hated) the name. The outpouring of support for the USMNT should be evidence enough that even if people don't like soccer, they can bring themselves to cheer for the USA. The same (I believe) holds true for Los Angeles. My feelings are well documented even in the Galaxy forum and it seems the front office is content to keep the name. Even as a loyal fan and STH, I loathe the moniker. It's only marginally better than the 'Mutiny' or 'Wizards.' If the sport is ever poised to turn the corner in this country, it's time we start thinking bigger. The cheeky team names may have had their time and place, but it's time to mature as a league.
Just as many fans seem to hate the FC's, Reals, and Uniteds of American soccer. For me, I have no opinion on this rebrand yet. I just want whatever is going to be done to be done. Wish there were more room around Honda and Angels without depleting parking. I'd go to an MLS match in Anaheim.
And everyone's entitled to their opinion, sure. In my opinion, this American fallacy of 'we always know best,' has to cease. The rest of the world are leaps and bounds ahead of us in the game and marketing it to a community (versus just sports fans.) I'm not saying we need to mimic the rest of the world, but there is an argument to be made about marketing a "city" versus a "team name." I mean, why else do we have the "Los Angeles" Angels of Anaheim? I fear we're stuck with the Galaxy, but here's hoping Chivas make the most of the opportunity and truly build a Los Angeles themed franchise.
Definitely. Galaxy?... too small. Go big...LA Cosmos, LA Universe, or how about, the LA Multiverses!!
You guys do realize that Galaxy was selected because: 1. It was a cheap knock-off of Cosmos 2. It conveniently has a giant LA in the middle of it Nicknames aren't all that bad... Sheffield Wednesday... Melbourne Hearts... Glasgow Celtic. Surely we can come up with something that identifies with SoCal and LA! (Call Peter Wilt... he probably has 11 solid ideas!)
Yes hence my comment about traditional nicknames like Melbourne Hearts. Not much for tradition there.
You're forgetting: 3. A galaxy is full of stars, just like Los Angeles (Hollywood). Yes, I'm dead serious. This was one of the reasons Nike came up with the name Galaxy.
I have no emotional stake in this one, but I follow the thread. This may have even been mentioned before, but what about Angelino Football Club Just enough cross-cultural appeal and definitely a Los Angeles theme since it's the term for a Los Angeles person in both Eng/Spa.
Okay...maybe getting too anxious...but I'd like to know something soon. There are no leaks anywhere on the net
Apparently Miami politicians and Beckham's investment team could take some notes from MLS and the Chivas USA investors.
You're gonna piss one group off if you go with a euro-ish name (real Los angles) You'll piss off another group with an American-ish name (LA tigers) So it's a delicate balance. From what I've heard I like: Angelino/Angeleno football club Californios FC (great history w this name)
El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora la Reina de los Ángeles is how it started . The town of the queen of angels. City of Angels FC will work but it will shortened to "city" which I don't think anyone wants. But my vote has always been to stay simple : Club LA or LAFC
Club LA rubs me as being too similar to CUSA. I automatically think Club America because we are talking about a team that is already posing as another Mexican team. Trading one for another isn't a great idea. The team needs to distance itself from any type of name link even more so than anyone else because of the history the team now has.
