Interesting interview and new information. The idea of using a USL 1 team as an expanded reserve team has some merit. But it also brings up some issues about movement of players between the two teams. Would you have a full USL roster that is supplimented from time to time with reserve team players from the MLS team. How would short term moves be handeled, would it be done through short term loan deals. I think there would a number of items that would have to be worked out between MLS, USL and even US Soccer. Also, would USL even want to start the trend of some of their teams being feeder programs for MLS clubs? It's all very interesting. :D

    Club press release...
    Ride the Soccer Tide!

Elite soccer talent from the Puget Sound will take to the field this weekend as the Tacoma Tide FC is back for the summer of 2008. On Mother’s Day, May 11th, the Tide will play their home opener at Curtis HS Stadium. The soccer buzz is ringing loud in the Puget Sound’s ears, and the Tacoma Tide will look to ride the wave in their 3rd season. The Tide’s league, Premier Development League, is the top semi-pro league in North America. The nationwide league pits 67 teams from Florida, to Canada, to the Northwest in four conferences. The Tide will continue to represent the Puget Sound with the very best soccer products from the area as well as local college stars.
The Tide will bring back some star names from last season and some fresh talent as well. Star goal scorers, Rory Agu (former Curtis HS product) and Spencer Schomaker (Syracuse U. / Roosevelt HS) will receive passes from Chase Tangney (Univ. of San Diego / Bellarmine Prep) and Machael David (declared to UC Santa Barbara / Sr. at Gig Harbor HS) among others. The overall roster returns a large portion of a team that qualified for the Conference Semi-Finals in 2007.
One star Tacoma Tide player will not be back this season. Midfielder, Ciaran O’Brien, demonstrated the PDL’s purpose and has catapulted up to the top American soccer league, the MLS. O’Brien was selected as the 5th overall pick in the 2008 MLS SuperDraft by the Colorado Rapids. Who will be the next Tide star to make the jump?
The Tide season begins Friday, May 9th, in Spokane, Washington against the Spokane Spiders. They will then return home for the May 11th home opener at 1:00pm from Curtis HS Stadium. Fans who attend games this season will get free prizes, laughs from Surf Dude (the new mascot), and excellent entertainment from the pitch. Tickets are available online at www.TacomaFC.com. Season tickets are just $80 for adults and $30 for students. Season ticket holders will also get a free Tacoma Tide scarf and more! Single game passes are $10 for adults and just $5 for students.
The Tacoma Tide will also be featured on Comcast On Demand this season. Every home game will be FREE to all Comcast digital cable subscribers through their On Demand, Channel 1 feature under Get Local, Local Sports, Tacoma Tide. Games will be available as soon as 24 hours after the game.
For more information on schedules, tickets, group deals, rosters, or anything about the team: visit www.TacomaFC.com or call (253) 564-9329.

Here are some video and photo highlights from the Tide win over the Surge. I talk with Rory Agu at the end of it. The wind is so strong that you can't hear some parts, but thanks to Rory for talking with GT!

    We'll have photos up later.

Come see the new Tide center back Daniel Scott, from Gonzaga. He's the brother of Sounders player Zach Scott.

Jake (Sagare) won his *only* USL-1 Championship medal as a Sounder. :D

He's doing quite well for the Reds and it will be fun to see him play again down the line.

Yeah, truly. Sorry to go a bit off topic here, but I grew up in Yakima and watched the Reds from their inaugural season. Still try and drive up for a match a year (this year isn't looking promising though). This is by far the best the Reds have played since they started. The Open Cup spot is theirs to lose with both remaining matches at home against the other contenders (cept Tacoma) and holding the tiebreaker over the Tide. We'll see if BYU and Ogden can manage well on the road against both Yakima and Tacoma.

I'd much rather have the Reds go than BYU!

Yeah seriously, I'd rather have the Tides go than BYU as well. It would ruin the Northwest rep. A college team? No way, they shouldn't even be able to qualify.

It's looking good for the Reds! They beat BYU 2-1 last night on a goal in the 90th minute:

    http://www.uslsoccer.com/stats/2008/657313.html

Meanwhile Tacoma was thrashing Ogden 5-0.

So this means (I think) that the Reds get an early open cup spot if they can beat Ogden tomorrow in Yakima.

Tacoma has a chance only if they beat BYU and Ogden upsets Yakima. A draw would be enough for the Reds only if BYU and Tacoma draw.

After what I saw of the Outlaws tonight in Tacoma, I'd say Yakima is about to qualify.

It was Glorious! Very good news for me in PDL and Mexico. Certainly balancing things considering how bad things went for me in USL and MLS.

This is a really cool thread! I'm a reds fan, but I come in peace. To be honest I'm really growing to love the Tide/Reds Rivalry. It reminds me alot of our old bitter rivalry with the spokane shadow. every Tide/Reds game regardless of score is some of our most exciting games of the whole season. Last year when the Tide whooped the Reds in Tacoma was a crazy game and even the 3-1 reds win here 2 weeks ago was a good one.

Of course the last game of the season is between the Reds and to the Tide. The way it's looking now that could be a playoff determining game. Here's to a great season to the tide, and hopefully that last game won't matter to either of our clubs, as we'll both clinch by then. :)
