Why exactly does the thread refer to the tournament as the Stupid Cup of Nations?

Toure getting injured. I'd also refer to other stupid parts of the tournament, such as why it's so super good that it's staged in the middle of the season, but I'm not going to go down that road.

It was created in reaction to the Toure injury.

And whats gone wrong with Bafana Bafana these last few years? They need to shape up in time for the World Cup. The only explanation I have is that the power cuts have forced them to stop practicing after dark.

To be honest, this competition is just a chance for the coach to play and try out new South African players, and see how they are. It's all about building up for the 2010 squad really, while trying to keep some respectability. That of course isn't such a great excuse, but one that I guess I'll be sticking by...

I must say that it doesn't look all that promising though. Last season, at 17 years of age, I was essentially playing in the 4th league of South African football...it just doesn't say too much about the country's progress, who won the Cup in 96:eek:

Eboue started for Cote d'Ivoire today and, as expected, Toure was rested.

Drogba and Mikel both scored in ACN action today.

Song played the full 90 in Cameroon's 3-0 win today... no real indication of how he played, though.

Still, it's pretty impressive that he's been starting for Cameroon.

Looks like he's played c-mid in all three games, partnering with Geremi (unless Geremi is out on the wing?)

He played the second half of the first game, and has played the full 90 in the last two.

The lineups i saw on the BBC made it look like Song was playing on the left side of midfield, but who knows.

I wonder why Cameroon didn't bring Lauren?

Thanks for the info. Actually, the ACN will probably end up being a good thing for Song. It'll be nice to see him get a run of games for a change.

Looks like we found our left wing solution. :D

Has the beeb been the best source of ACN stuff for you? I haven't found much good coverage. Surely there's some English African coverage somewhere... some South African Web site or something.

I haven't really looked anywhere else, but they are usually pretty accurate with their lineups and the World Service is covering the tournament, so they should know what they're talking about. But i haven't seen any of the games so i have no idea.

Nice, that's some more in-depth coverage. Too bad the video highlights won't play.

In response to your earlier question anti, Cameroon called Lauren up when he said he was reconsidering his international retirement, but then once the callup came for him he decided to stay in retirement and declined it. That was one of the reasons that Song got called up in the first place.

Officials were probably too damn scared of him to pressure him like Domenech would.

Kolo not in starting line-up today. I'm a bit worried that his injury is worse than originally feared.

The less he plays for them the better. Let him get totally fit on their time. Not ours. Though Phil has been coming along recently, I don't know how much longer I think that can last.

They said he will be out for 10 days, and I'm not sure if it has been 10 days.

    More like a full 120.

He did play left mid btw... def not his natural position based on his performance. Really good experience for the lad regardless.
