I’d still give him a chance. I think most would...I think most understand that through his horrible contract management and transfer decisions, this club is in need of a massive rebuild that will be much longer than one season, if not two or three. But I also could be way wrong.
The Telegraph: "Arsenal split on who they want to succeed Arsene Wenger." https://www.telegraph.co.uk/football/2018/04/18/arsenal-split-want-succeed-arsene-wenger/ So here we are as a fanbase getting mugged for clicks by journos yet again. The new "transfer war chest" and "list of names" is a list of managerial options. Same game all over again. This is all magical thinking until we actually hire one of these people that are not Brendan fcuking Rodgers.
Its really hard to gauge if the team is doing bad at the moment because of tactics, personnel or both. I think any new manager gets 2 years to build a team and style, and its about selling a message fans can get behind. If a new manager comes in, parks the bus ever week, we play dour football and finish 6th no one will be happy. But if a new manager comes in with an attacking brand of football, and its the players that aren't up to it because the previous management didn't develop the kids, and make smart purchases, then fans like myself will be happy.
I think there is a lot of truth in this - proven by Leicester being able to win the league a weak league easily ahead of Arsenal. In the last 5 years the premier league was characterised by mismanagement and this was illustrated by weakness in europe - all the major clubs had a combination of front office and management weakness. Utd - allowed the squad to get old. Poor succession planning. Loss of institutional knowledge. Poor front office from which they are only just now recovering after 5 years and have comfortably overtaken Arsenal under Jose City - mediocre management and poor front office allowed squad to age disastrously. In two years they have fixed this and emphatically so. Liverpool - major improvement in front office. Reservations about Klopp but the overall front office and management team is comfortably strong than Arsenal Spurs - have been stronger than Arsenal for some years now. Chelsea - having won two titles in the last 5 years, they have hardly underperformed compared to investment. One blip year. So while Wenger is getting worse the other clubs have sorted themselves out. I think this is one key reason why Arsenal finally sorted out the front office.
I wasn't talking so much about counter - but simply the pace at which the ball is moved in possession Check Spurs vs City when down 2-1 They consistently created chances vs a packed defence or press via 1 or 2 touch passing with very rapid changes in orientation This is why its so easy to defend against Arsenal
Well the replacement has a lot of work to do If they identify a style of play suited to the opposition and bring in promising players and experienced guys I have no issue waiting
Arsenal's xG for the season, despite all kinds of chaos, is .8 lower than Sperz. Despite Sperz having, at worst, the third best striker in the world. Arsenal's problems are almost exclusively defensive.
Agreed. Depends on the quality of play and where it looks like the team is going. If it looks like the team is getting better and playing well, I think patience is warranted. Now if we're playing like United have this season, the knives need to be rather long.
Wenger's presser was a doozy today https://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/arsenal-press-conference-live-updates-12389307 Man is Robert Neville in I Am Legend.
Was there something in the video that's not in the text? I didn't see anything that was really out there when I read the article.
The new manager would be given 2 seasons minimum. After 20+ seasons of one manager, do you really think a new manager would fix the problems the old manager never decided to fix altogether? Case in point: Your club. When Nicholson quit, the club struggled and eventually were relegated not two seasons thereafter.
That’s why xg needs to be used with the eye test because that is irrelevant compared to how much better they are at both ends Maybe they create a lot of chances so it doesn’t matter as much that they waste them and of course they can play and hold a lead where as we play one way
Good question. How deep does our ethical, patient culture run? Or does it depend on the personality of the majority owner? Most people on this board seem to have tied our patience to Kroenke. Whether that's because he likes Wenger so much, or just doesn't have cut-throat aspirations to win titles, I don't know that we'll ever know... because he's Silent Stan! In any case, I do sometimes wonder, along with you how deeply our culture runs, given that there's very little continuity at the board level from earlier eras of AFC. And our 22 year manager is about to jump ship (or so many hope). But I do just slightly, tenuously hold onto the mythology of "The Arsenal Way", if only because it's nice to believe that your team has "better morals" than the other guys. And I guess that up until now you can still make a reasonable case that we do.
true that. and we kept the gaffer who took us down, came back up, and won a bunch of pots under him. I'm not denying your point - but it was a totally different time. hey, you don't have to convince me. I'm not (hypothetically) asking whether or not he should be given time. I'm not even asking if you fellas, individually, think he should. I'm wondering whether or not you think your fan base, in general, would give him time.* what one sees on Arsenal Fan TV makes one wonder. granted, it's been a long old slog to where folks view Wenger as they do, so I can't necessarily say that current dispositions are the result of impatience. But much of the current fan base, it seems to me, see the club rather differently than back in the day. Hell, this forum alone is night and day from what it was 10 years back. I honestly don't know what to expect ... hence the question. *which that response answered, to be fair.
It's amazing how they screw over the fans left and right and don't even try and maintain a competitive level and they are seen as ethical by some.
Let's not kid ourselves Dino wumger is not for turning and the board lacks the owners backing to sack him
Wenger has officially announced that he leaves at the end of the season https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/43834283
From Arsenal.com: https://www.arsenal.com/news/merci-arsene They must have someone lined up, I can't see how you make this announcement at this stage without that. Probably just waiting until the end of the season so as not to distract whoever it is from the job he's currently got.
I'm here to check in on this topic. My first thought also was that they must have a successor lined up already, due to the timing of this. This was the first season I moved being on the fence to fully being "Wenger Out," so hoping the last few weeks go peacefully, and ideally on a high note (ie. Winning Europa).
