I kind of like the idea of this being more old-fashionedly episodic, if their claims are to be believed.
I'm planning to do Discovery Season 1, Short Treks Season 1, Discovery Season 2, Short Treks Season 2, and be done about a week before Strange New Worlds comes out. I'm through episode 11 of season 1 of Discovery right now and will probably do 2 episodes tonight.
I'm through episode 8 of Season 2 now (Talos IV!) and will be ready for the start of SNW either the day of release or by next weekend. One thing I can say for the new Spock is that with the beard he looks oddly like a young Alex Ovechkin. Definitely looking forward to this show as Anson Mount plays a compelling Pike.
It just hit me that they're straight up stealing Star Wars' thunder this year. Star Wars Day is May 4th, obviously, but Obi-Wan doesn't release until the 27th. Meanwhile, what day is SNW debuting? May 5th. They're going to take everyone's geeky high from the day before and try to snag some new viewers. The early reviews from people who got to watch a few episodes has been very positive, so maybe we're actually getting an old school approach befitting of the era that's supposedly being covered by the show.
Full body chills several times and then the reveal of that certain family member in the final scene was amazing. If episode 1 is any indication, this is going to be in contention with TOS, TNG, and DS9 for best series. That felt more like Star Trek than anything I've watched in 20 years.
4 episodes in and this really is a great show. They've got the right balance of self-contained episodes and continuing character development.
I am enjoying this show a lot. Good cast, good characters, lovely to watch in HD, no bad writing so far.
This might be my favorite Trek cast since Voyager. Genuinely. Even down to the smaller supporting roles, like Gia Sandhu as T'Pring. The Spock & T'Pring mini screwball comedy in this latest episode was adorable.
It's so refreshing to have this cast and formula for the show. The Enterprise Bingo bit was another really good subplot. This just feels like Star Trek and I hope it's doing huge numbers for Paramount+. Apparently this is the most critically acclaimed Trek series ever.
Finally got caught up with this series. Man, what a fun show! It's definitely the best live-action Star Trek show since Star Trek: Enterprise (especially its fourth/final season) and it's the type of show I was pretty much expecting and looking forward to when Star Trek: Discovery was first announced. I can't wait to see how both this show and The Orville: New Horizons continue to progress this season. -G
I think one thing that this show understand and that Discovery didn't for the longest time is that in Trek, you have to do right by your entire ensemble, not just by the two or three leads. So I already feel like I know the crew better than I did after even a couple of seasons of Discovery. e.g. how long did it take for say Detmer on Discovery to become more than just a random face on the bridge?
