http://www.virginiacavalry.com/vip-se-progress-report/ The stadium isn't going to be ready for the start of the 2014 season, and maybe not much of the middle. So what are the alternatives, People Who Live Near There?
That piece of news is literally the least shocking thing I have ever read. I anticipated this from the very get go.
It was never going to be easy to get that thing built in the limited window they had. It's harder to do this than people think. It's going to hurt season tickets (obviously) and might even hurt the baseball team more than the soccer team. You can find a high school or small college stadium to play soccer in more readily than a decent ballpark, I would guess.
Though the stadium may not be ready in time for the first half of 2014, the team will still play in the Spring season: NASL club in Virginia seeking temporary home https://www.washingtonpost.com/blog...nasl-club-in-virginia-seeking-temporary-home/ It's only a matter of where.
Goff says George Mason U. or two Loudoun locations. Here's Mason: Supposedly seats 5,000 with a track around it.

There is a bleacher on one side. It's a pretty good field and great track (the field has felt a lot better in recent years). Of course there is some distance from the field to the stands. Other than the track being better than most high schools in the area, it's not much better than any high school from the point of view of seating. However, the Fairfax location is probably better than Loudoun.
Beat me to it. I suppose it's worth noting, the template for athletic fields used on newer high schools in northern Virginia has been a main stadium for football (and normally soccer or lacrosse) without a track and another area with smaller stands for the track and a field for smaller sports or practices.
There's lots worse. Baseball stadiums are worse. Bad carpet is worse. Bad location is worse. St. Petersburg is worse. Not playing at all is worse.
This is true. Also "Club officials have not ruled out exploring distant locations, such as Maryland SoccerPlex, the University of Maryland and RFK Stadium." I think the more time passes, we will see something even closer to DC. There are at least five solid options in the area.
I read the Goff article and had to laugh at that. Nothing says Virginia team like playing in Maryland. There's no way they could afford RFK unless their plans are for the auxiliary field. and that's the actual plan...
It's the old debate of a team from one state playing in a neighboring one (e.g. NY Red Bulls, NY Giants, NY Jets, etc.) Let's give it time and we'll see how everything will unfold.
You could have used local examples... Washington Redskins. However, the team was founded on being a team for Virginia. It's not a Maryland team or even a Washington area team. I admit I'm saying some of this after already being skeptical and having issues with how the team was presented in the first place, but... it is what it is.
I think the Maryland/DC locations are too far from the permanent location to be good options unless they're really desperate. You'd have to market the temporary games to people that are pretty unlikely to follow the team to Ashburn, and then start from scratch once the new stadium opens.
