Steven Goff @SoccerInsider St Louis City SC planning to acquire defender Josh Yaro, I'm told, for MLS Next Pro squad this year before adding him to first team for 2023 MLS season. Yaro, 27, was 2nd overall pick in 2016 MLS draft by Philadelphia, played in USL Championship for San Antonio & San Diego.
3 games officially on the docket for @stlCITYsc in their preseason schedule ahead of the inaugural @MLSNEXTPRO season. Feb 11 - vs FC Cincinnati in Clearwater, FL Mar 5 - vs Lou City FC in STL (site unknown yet) TBA - vs SLU at Hermann Stadium in STL
Preseason @stlCITYsc @MLSNEXTPRO action. @loucityfc is coming to town March 5th. Open to the public. Location TBA. The glorious return of the #KingsCup! @StLouligans v @LouCoopers
The MLS Next Pro roster will be made up of not only St. Louis CITY SC Academy players, but players from outside of their system locally, in addition to other professionals they will be signing. On both the CITY SC Report podcast and Flyover Footy, we've discussed roster mechanisms such as the Homegrown player in MLS. Essentially, these are players local to the club who have spent time with the club, and can be signed to an MLS contract at a reduced hit to the salary cap. It provides guaranteed money to the player and would not subject them to the SuperDraft or any other club signing them away. Clubs in MLS have historically signed players with at least 1 year in their Academy to Homegrown contracts, as well as players in their "Homegrown territory", which is a geographical range around the club's city that they have first rights to players in. In their announcement of Karson and Josh, it is therefore noteworthy that on Instagram, STL CITY SC posted the following: https://www.cityscreport.com/l/mls-next-pro-what-we-know-so-far/
