This is exciting though. It would be nice to see either Santa Clara, which represents the Azores, or Olhanense, basically a team for Faro. Would be cool to see Estoril get back in the L too.

Olhanese just beat Portimanese 4 - 1 in a heated Algarve derby. The game was played in beautiful weather apparently, and Olhao representatives dominated at home.

Djalmir, their striker, has scored 18 goals for the team thus far. They are now 4 points clear of Acores Santa Clara...

Olhanense has been promoted to the Liga Sagres yesturday with a 1 - 0 win! So happy that a Southern team is in there. Olhao is only about a 15 minute drive from Faro and maybe 25 minutes from the Estadio Algarve.

What are the chances that Olhanese is allowed to play at the Estadio Algarve(30,000) opposed the Estádio José Arcanjo(Capacity 10,000).

I think if they played their games at the Estadio Algarve, they could essentially grab a larger market share of supporters in the south before any Southern teams make their mark(Last team from Algarve was Farense 7 years ago). People from Olhao would no doubt travel those 30 minutes to go to the game, however additionally, they would attract people from Faro as well, as their team is lingering in the 3rd division. Also a few people from the little towns around that general area.

Unfortunately Quarteira/Villamoura are a good distance away. I also find it rather hard to believe that Quarteira/Villamoura do not have a solid team in that city. The surrounding populaus/area there is the largest in the south outside of Portimao, and its one of the wealthiest spot in Portugal.

Olhanense has history. They've been in the top division even before Sp. Farense if I'm not mistaken.

Yes you are right. I have been doing some research into the club. But this is one of the reason why I think it even more viable that they should consider moving into a new home. I think its actually shameful that there is not strong, solid representative in the 1st division from the south. I figured, a team with history, close to Faro, should take the oppertunity to solidify that.

Besides being good for Olhao, it would be good for the league and essentially the stadium would be in more use as well would it not.

I have no doubt that Olhanense will rent the Algarve stadium for all 3 home games vs the big 3. Besides those games it won't make much difference if they play in their own stadium when meeting any other SL club because the crowds will not be over the capacity limit.

True, but I am thinking longterm. People from Faro/Loule will not go to Olhao to see a game, but they might very well leave their houses if its in their backyard, and thus attract higher attendances, and possibly solidify themselves as the team from the South.

Anyways, besides the administration side of the club, Olhanese is going to have to do some work on the pitch as well. Their top scorer Djalmir is 33 years old and I think he will have much trouble being that successful in the 1st division. They should do some serious scouting around A Liga and in their own backyard for the future.

If Jorge Costa stays on as the coach, he'll be keenly aware of the pitfalls of the SL .

Yeah, it wasn't the league though. It was a knockout type of competition. Essentially the same thing at the Taca de Portugal now.

yeah but at the time this was considered the competition that defined the
    Portuguese champion.

the Nation-wide League system wasnt implemented in Portugal until the 1930s.
