Strike begins - matchday 9 is postponed. The players' strike has started. The Spanish government's sports council stepped in as mediator, but this week's negotiations failed, and the players' union said the federation RFEF's €1m pay offer "does not solve the conflict" in playing conditions. The RFEF/Mediapro feud is also there in the background - they both seem to be using the strike to seek control of TV rights.

Some are saying it's the first women's football league to go on strike - is that right?

    Matchday 8 highlights 2019/20
In early November before the strike, there was one last weekend of games - it was a good one for Barça and Atlético Madrid, who got big wins over their rivals and went clear in 1st and 2nd place. It's all set up for a good title race when they return.

    Barcelona 5 - 0 Levante - (Graham Hansen 40', Alexia 45', Jenni Hermoso 88', 89', Hamraoui 90')
    Highlights https://www.fcbarcelona.com/en/videos/1481337/womens-football-highlights-barca-5-0-levante

    Atlético Madrid 4 - 1 Deportivo La Coruña - (Duggan 17', 45', Ángela Sosa 41', Charlyn Corral 82' - María Méndez 57')

Below Deportivo (3rd), it's Logroño and Rayo, who've had great seasons so far, while Espanyol's problems continue - in last place (16th), the Pericos have only 1 point in 8 matches.

    Rayo Vallecano 2 - 1 RCD Espanyol - (Oriana Altuve 12'p, Eva Alonso 78' - Paloma 25')
    Highlights: https://eldesmarque.com/barcelona/primera-iberdrola/144970-el-espanyol-sigue-sin-reaccionar-2-1

    EDF Logroño 1 - 1 Madrid CFF - (Jade Boho 49' - Marie-Laure Delie 90')

In mid-table, Athletic Bilbao (7th) lost at Tenerife (11th), while Real Sociedad climbed up to 8th:

    UDG Tenerife 1 - 0 Athletic Bilbao - (Allegra Poljak 40')
    Match report, Ellas son Futbol

    Sevilla 1 - 2 Real Sociedad (green) - (Virgy 67' - Bárbara 15', Palacios 50')

Real Madrid are 15th, in the relegation zone  ... it's almost beyond any rational explanation.

    Tacón de Real Madrid 1 - 1 Real Betis - (Peter 52' - Priscila 34′)

(we knew God would be angry about that Title IX thread, but this punishment for Real is too much! Have mercy, O Lord)

And Sporting Huelva/Huelga took advantage to escape the bottom 2 with a win. By their standards, it was a goal-fest...

    Sporting Huelva 2 - 1 Valencia - (Mascaró 33′, 64′ - Mari Paz 16′)

In international action, Spain went to Poland for their final qualifier of 2019, but they couldn't make a breakthrough, in a game of many masks :ninja:

Haven't there been league strikes in South America once or twice in the past year already?

Oh, this is monumentally stupid.......

'Since it was all the clubs that did not appear, in this case, it would mean deducting three points from all of them in the competition. A rule that also assumes that, in the case of a second absence in the same season, that is, in the case of a new strike day if there was no agreement on the December 20 deadline set by the parties, "the guilty team will be excluded from the competition."'

This RFEF federation doesn't mess around! These strike days could get everybody relegated, by the terms of article 77. And Christmas is cancelled.

...or they'll enact article 42, which allows the fed to reschedule matches at their discretion.

IUsport asks whether this nonsense is a breach of the right to strike, which somehow I think is the RFEF's intention - to hurry the clubs and the players into an agreement. Anyway it's irresponsible and dishonest - as if they'll expel Barcelona, Atlético, Athletic etc.

Eva Sofia Jakobsson has been the best player of Tacon so far.

We need to change the whole coach staff to improve.

    That team's doing ok atm.

More concerning, the RFEF isn't announcing its ruling on the unplayed matches, it's ridiculous. The players' deadline for a new agreement is next Friday, 20 Dec. There's some talk about male players taking action in support of the strike, but probably just rumours. Positive words can help - a message by Antoine Griezmann (Barça/France) got 28 million 'likes', and the vast monetary sums in men's La Liga illustrate how petty it is to quibble over €1300 a month.

    Matchday 13
    Sat 14 Dec (CET)
Real Sociedad - EDF Logroño, 12:00
RCD Espanyol - FC Barcelona, 17:00
Real Betis - Sporting Huelva, 18:30
    Sun 15 Dec
Athletic Bilbao - Sevilla FC, 11:00

    Valencia - Levante UD, 13:00
UD Granadilla Tenerife - Atlético Madrid, 18:30

interesting pick up for our fav heel team
Real Madrid: Deyna Castellanos in line to join CD Tacon - AS.com
not sure when she'll join, though she's only 20, she's still listed as a senior at Florida State(so does she have enough credits to graduate early?) Florida St. was the previous year's NCAA champs, but looked terrible this time around in their playoff loss to UCLA. Not sure what position she's in as FS played the "Total Futebol' concept

Well, Tacón is a mess, but Castellanos is quality, as seen in multiple youth tournaments and also in Florida State one year ago when they won the title. I don't think shortlisting her for Ballon d'Or was actually justified, as exciting a player as she is, but it anyway happened.

Now, we've seen with Asllani and Jakobsson that signing random beaters is not enough, when the rest of the team (and probably the coaching staff) is not up to the task, but it's anyway difficult to think that Tacón won't get better with Castellanos as a target-striker.

It appears you haven't followed them lately. While it was true in the beginning of the season and for a longer time than it should have been it do not seem to be so any more. Currently for the last half dozen matches or so they are doing as well as could be expected (beating bottom team, beating or drawing mid-teams and losing against top team away with decent numbers like 1 to 2)

their currently 11th out of 16 in league standings, guess expecting more from a squad thats featuring 2 prominent Swedes, 2 Brazilian WC players/Peter, Kaci & Ubogagu have had NT experiences with 3 powerhouse countries/another 3 upcoming youths
But their domestic players played Div 2 last year, and it be hard to pick up any new ones since Barca & AM have apparently cornered the market for NT players.
Got to wonder; how tough is the league when Spain's NT is still not good enough to make it into the top 10?
from watching some of their games; I'm a big fan of Sofia Jakobsson, but the way she's used as a single striker. she's just way too fast for her even her own team mates to keep up with her, so she's usually taking on defenses 1v4. Cuz of her speed(she don't slow down enough), she's not the most 'refined' of shot takers/ I would honesly place her more at mid, she actually looked great vs the US last couple of times as she dribbled right through the US fearsome, high press
Deyna was an outside mid at Florida St, her stats this season for was 12 goals, 11 assists in 24 games. Since she took most of the pk's & free kicks for the team, the assists ratio is more interesting, so can she become the play maker for Tacon, which the club apparently so desperately needs?
Considering FS had 5 NT internationals & several prominent US youth NT players, they had a disappointing year this time around, loosing 6 games including their playoff disaster vs UCLA(so not sure if Deyna's stock has actually risen)

The league returns for 2020 on Saturday (4 Jan), and on Sunday Athletic Bilbao and Barça will play in front of thousands at San Mamés.

► Some of the highlights from Matchdays 10-14:

Levante have moved up to 3rd...

    EDF Logroño (red) 3 - 4 Levante UD - (Jade 28'p, Chini 32', Isadora 60' - Zornoza 6', Redondo 13', 24', Eva Navarro 54')

    Sevilla 4 - 3 Valencia - (Ana Franco 26′, Payne 30′, 94', Pujadas og 37' - Pujadas 6', Mari Paz 43'p, 55')
    www.youtube.com/watch?v=agAojMCGtms
    [IMG]

Atlético Madrid had two bad weeks back-to-back - at the relegation-threatened Real Betis they drew 2-2, and then at home to Athletic Bilbao (4th)

Atlético Madrid 2 - 2 Athletic Bilbao (green)
(Leicy Santos 11', Carmen Menayo 51' - Lucía García 32', Laia og 53')
    www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZYiP0s1Bm1I
    [IMG]

No such problems for Barça, who've won 12 out of 13 so far.

    Espanyol 0 - 4 Barcelona
(Jenni Hermoso 32', 43', Marta Torrejón 84', Vicky Losada 93')
    www.youtube.com/watch?v=GZtYD5cwViE
    [IMG]

The last-placed Espanyol recovered from their home derby defeat, and surprisingly took a point from the 3rd-place Levante:

    Levante 1 - 1 Espanyol
    (Rocío Gálvez 51' - Débora García 63')
    www.youtube.com/watch?v=TrDXTqFJtR8
    [IMG]

In mid-table, Sociedad (8th) had overtaken Logroño (6th) with a big win, and a hattrick for Nahikari García, but Sociedad's match with Deportivo (5th) was rained off. Thus those two clubs now have a game in hand.

The cancelled 9th matchday still hasn't been re-scheduled. But the RFEF finally said they wouldn't punish clubs with relegation for players going on strike legally.

A second strike was averted, and it looks like positive news. The players union and clubs signed a "pre-agreement" which allowed the matches to proceed in December.

"If everything comes to fruition, it would be the first collective agreement in Europe that will set out in black-and-white the minimum conditions under which the players of a League develop their profession. A milestone, with huge social weight, for the sport practiced by women in the great year of women's football." - (El Pais / Archive)

[IMG] Barcelona currently lead the table by 5 points.

Hey! Do you know of a forum in Spanish for the Primera Iberdrola?

If not no problem, but I would not mind reading what Spanish people actually think of the league.

I can not speak Spanish, so my google searches are not finding me much.

The lost strike day from November might be played on 16 March, according to La Voz de Galicia, and either Atlético Madrid or Barça will move 2 league games to midweek in April/May, due to Champions League semi-finals for one club.

Will the soccer strike become a political football? The players' union met parliamentarians from the governing Socialist Party, with the players voicing frustration that the pre-agreement still isn't ratified. A second strike is not ruled out. (-El Español). As usual, future media rights are a major point of disagreement between broadcasters and clubs, and last week Atlético Madrid v Barça wasn't on TV. (-El País)

    (Luis Javier Modino Martínez, cc-by)

On the pitch, some key results in January:

Another bad month for Atlético Madrid - they drew away at their neighbours Rayo Vallecano (1-1) and at Sevilla (2-2), struggled to beat the strugglers Sporting Huelva, and predictably couldn't defeat Barcelona at home (0-0). Barça are marching to the title, as it is - the Catalan club lead by 9pts - while Atlético aren't guaranteed to re-enter the Champions League in 2nd place.

Atlético Madrid 1-0 Sporting Huelva - (Ángela Sosa 21'p)
    www.youtube.com/watch?v=CF9aeuhI_gw
    [IMG]

Levante (3rd) are only 2pts behind with almost a 100% record in January. They've achieved a solid record while sharing the goalscoring (Bermúdez, González, Redondo and Navarro), and having the league's 2nd-best defensive record. (primeraiberdrola.es/galvez-andres-jugadoras-levante, Autotranslated)
Levante would've had 2pts more if they hadn't conceded at Athletic (5th), a last-minute equalizer:

    Athletic Bilbao 1 - 1 Levante UD
    (Andrea Sierra 90' - Marta Corredera 13')
    www.youtube.com/watch?v=2IqRiB1ZkTI
    [IMG]

    (Match report: Ellas Son Fútbol)

Deportivo La Coruña are 4th - (I think Abanca is the sponsor's name?). Lucky for them, they still have a game in hand, with one rained-off in December.
This past week, Deportivo had a goal-filled encounter at Tenerife (9th)...

UD Granadilla Tenerife vs Deportivo de la Coruña Abanca. (Jornada 18), Full match - youtu.be/XNpiMg_q0Ys
    [IMG]

At the bottom, there's still some safety for Valencia and Huelva (14pts), just ahead of the relegation zone: Real Betis (12pts) and Espanyol (4pts).

    Upcoming:
Supercopa 2020 - the inaugural tournament of last season's most successful 4 women's clubs will run from 5-9 February, in Salamanca.
Copa de la Reina 2020 - the first round is scheduled for 11/12 February.

    Yup, signed on Wednesday.

It's... a win, I think! Not sure what scoreline. Maybe 3-2 or something. Can't believe it took such a prolonged fight to agree this: 14 months and 26 negotiations. In the end, the agreement covers a lot of things including contract renewal in case of maternity leave, and even specifies the length of work time for home games and away trips.
