With only one match day left in the group stage, some things look clear cut. Others are definitely muddled!

Group A: Done. Placement needs to be determined between Ecuador and Germany. Ecuador wins the group with a win or draw. Germany can win the group with a victory.

Group B: Three teams are in contention for the 2nd round. England will be in the second round regardless of their outcome with Sweden. A draw will get Sweden to the second round. A win will enable them to win the group. If they lose and Trinidad & Tobago beat Paraguay by 2 goals, T & T could edge out the Swedes, if Sweden were to lose 1-0. The odds favor Sweden, but the World Cup has, and will always produce surprising results. We'll know more after Tuesday.

Group C: Done. Both Argentina and the Netherlands are into the second round. A substantial goal differential will see Argentina take the top spot with a draw. Like Germany's situation in Group A, the Dutch have to win to secure 1st place here.

Group D: Mirror image of Group B. Portugal have advanced to round 2, regardless of the outcome of their match with Mexico. Mexico wins the group with a victory. They move to the next round with a draw. Mexico and Sweden are in the same boat if they suffer losses. Angola must beat Iran and hope for a Portugal win, then hope their goal differential is better than Mexico's.

Group E: Exciting finish looms here. Everyone still has a chance to get through. Italy can make it to round 2 with a draw, and could even win the group with a draw. The Italians win the group with a victory over the Czechs on Thursday. The Czech Republic can also qualify with a draw or a win. They could take the group if they win. Ghana will qualify with a victory over the United States, and that might be good enough to win the group too. Ghana can also advance with a draw and a Czech win over Italy. The United States is in a must-win situation. Anything less will see them eliminated, and even then, they might not see the second round if Italy were to lose to the Czech Republic. Of all the teams in this group, only Italy could afford a loss Thursday, and still make it to round 2.

Group F: Brazil are into the second round and only need a draw to win the group. Everyone else is still alive, although you could say Japan is on life support. A draw should be good enough for Australia to advance unless Japan rocks Brazil's world! Croatia needs a victory and nothing less to get out of this group. Even so, the Croats could lose out if Japan beats Brazil by 2 goals and they only beat Australia by 1.

Group G: This group has plenty of possibilities. Only Togo are eliminated. Three teams could end up on 5 points, and it could all come down to goal difference. The winner of Switzerland vs. South Korea will go to the second round as winner of this group. The loser has a chance to advance if Togo defeats or ties France. The French must win to have a chance to get out of the group stage.

Group H: Spain are into the second round regardless of their outcome against Saudi Arabia. The bottom three teams can still qualify, although a poor goal difference for the Saudis practically puts them out of the mix. They must beat Spain by four goals and hope for a Ukraine-Tunisia tie to have a minimal chance. A Tunisia win will see them qualify for the next round, while Ukraine looks likely to advance with only a draw and a good showing by Spain. A Ukraine win will definitely get them into the next round.
