My friend Marek has friends in from Poland. At the bar, we broke out the Malort. I guess they won't be back again. Shame, they seemed like nice people.
found a spot 7 miles from my house that carries New Glarus, there a case in the fridge now. I expect to feel poorly tomorrow morning.
I think it's Wisconsin hipsterism. They actually market themselves as "available only in Wisconsin." The Chicago equivalent is the people who pretend Old Style doesn't taste like a raccon drank a case of Hamm's Light and threw up in your mouth.
They didn't? I could have sworn I had some recently and I haven't been north of Wrigley in forever. Then again it may have been dark Lord day and someone from Wisconsin may have handed me on e
Where I am from back in Pennsylvania there are many different kinds of Birch Beer and here it's very difficult to get for some reason. It actually is made from Birch Bark extracts and has a unique flavor that lives somewhere between Root Beer and Cream Soda and maybe because there aren't so many Birch forests in the midwest it doesn't have the same appeal? It's got that Root Beer bite but without the cloying heaviness and it's somewhat less sweet which is where I like my soda pop to be. Sometimes Birch beer is more white or clear and sometimes it's red or dark brown depending on the manufacturer. Pennsylvania Dutch brand is kind of pinkish yellow and I think Boylan's is dark red. Stewart's also makes it and I have seen it occasionally where rare soda pops are sold. My favorite local soda pop is Canfield's 50/50 all the way especially to wash down a taco. Something about the grapefruit and lemon tang.
Good job keeping out the riff raff! If you can't handle the Malort, you probably can't handle January in Chicago either.
Intriguing. I'm a big fan of root beer, so I'll have to hunt this stuff down some time. Too bad the specialty soda store on Montrose closed down a couple years ago now.
Huh. Sounds cool. Maybe Goose Island could start trying to make their own version. I don't know what you guys think of their beer, but their specialty sodas are amazing. Of course I'll have the Pennsylvania Dutch style, but I just want to see what WBC would do with it. In fact I don't know if they have done and I will check. But I will keep an eye out for the two brands you mentioned.
Try World Market? I think they have an extensive candy and soda pop selection. There's 4 or 5 around the Chicago area. I know they have Boylan's orange and root beer so maybe Birch Beer too. http://www.worldmarket.com/category/food-and-drink/drink/juice-soda-water.do
I was a big fan of the Goose Island Honker's Ale but when the brewery was bought out by Anheiser-Busch back in 2011 the production of that flagship flavor was moved and the quality instantly dropped from something akin to a nice English Bitter Ale to something mass produced. Oddly, I didn't know the brand had been sold, I just thought I had picked up a "bad" batch of the stuff and a few weeks later I tried it again and it was also horrible. I may have tried a third time a few months later until I did some research and discovered the sale. It was my tastebuds that tipped me off. It just isn't the same and their other flavors weren't something I was really into, just the Honker's Ale. http://articles.chicagotribune.com/...icago-s-goose-island-craft-beer-craft-brewers
Only Wisconsin. I hate Wisconsin. They're my least favorite state after: Ohio Florida Texas Alabama Oklahoma and Kansas Also every state with a North, South or West in front of their name. Where's the creativity?
Now that I think about it I believe I had it when some Minnesota United guy brought it when we were playing them on the training grounds
How can you not like a state that has gas stations with corn dogs, porn, fireworks, live bait, alcohol and of course, gasoline?
Surprisingly, they wanted another another...and then invited my girlfriend and I to visit them in Gdansk, even though we met them for about an hour and I probably said 8 words. The power of Malort, I guess (or my girlfriend Edyta is just that charming...yes, probably the Malort.)
Anyone know where I can get custom malort labels? I'm thinking one that says "Flesh Eating Slug Repellant" for my Harry Potter marathon
