The other thing to consider, is that this seems to happen quite consistently when you have matchups between Brazil, Argentina, and whichever SA nation is doing well at the moment (Chile, Colombia, Uruguay, etc…)
Most events like these have security checkpoints, ticket check and other bottlenecks WAY before you get to the stadium. Usually, these guys don't get anywhere near the stadium to get into the air ducts. Sure, a few always get through, but not enough to cause a delay by 80 minutes and pose a serious security threat.
The only issue I had was that the food/beer line took too long. My thought at the time was that they just didn't have enough, and didn't understand the base audience. Otherwise, it was fantastic, and thought out. At least around the Rose Bowl/Old Pasadena.
Rose Bowl was superbly well organized. Stanford Stadium was a potential death trap: 83k capacity with lots of narrow steep staircases, tunnels and wooden structures. It’s since been demolished and rebuilt into a smaller stadium. Levi’s stadium - a ‘26 venue - has egress issues too but they’re minor in comparison to the old Stanford Stadium.
That video seems to show nothing. People climbing fans one way and then climbing back. I don't get it.
That was not a good advert for the WC in 2 yrs time. Complete cluster******** and Commebol has a lot to do with it. Having said that, reading the reports, Miami police didn’t cover themselves in glory either. It was sheer luck there were no casualties either. Crowds being pushed and pressed into closed gates is generally a recipe for disaster. In what world people w/out tickets ended up all the way inside the complex? What a shitshow.
As a side note, what the ******** with a 25 min half time show? Those clowns on top of world football (FIFA, Commebol etc) have to realize there is no need to copy the NFL and Super Bowl.
The extra time and the Miami weather are bad enough, but I think the combination of the delay of the starting time and the delay at halftime certainly contributed to the players getting excessively tired and cramping up. It affected both sides, but especially the Colombians, who had the tougher road to the final.
Yeah, and if they are going to emulate the SB, do the show before the match. Less intrusive that way.
More important than the tougher path to the final, I think Argentina just has more depth. The triple sub they made early in extra-time really seemed to turn the tide in their favor. They took out 3 top players yet lost nothing on the quality front and gained a lot of energy.
I like this, if they insist on doing it. Have the 15min show 1-1.5hrs before kickoff. That will get a bunch of people to show up at the stadium early, and then the actual rush for game time will be severely reduced. As long as TV broadcast is live in real time by the start of the 2nd half, no harm done. Streaming has 1-2minute delays all the time anyways.
Right. We can't repeat this enough! I know in the US people love to put on great shows, and Shakira is a great performer, nothing wrong with that. But soccer fans are different. When we go to watch soccer, we want to watch soccer, nothing else. Whoever runs the next WC needs to understand that.
