The article below anounces the following : "The decision will make the Golf Masters, which traditionally has the highest ratings in golf, the only commercial-free telecast in sports" Um...except for halftime, soccer is commercial free. I don't think the statement above is accurate. Bad journalism. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/golfonline/news/2002/08/30/augusta_commercials_ap/
Thanks for the tip Soccer scout. In the last hour since reading your post, I have already mobilized the entire Pennsylvania soccer community to occupy the headquarters of the Philadelphia Inquirer in protest of this slander. We will shoot one hostage every hour until the newspaper agrees to stop using the AP wire service. Additionally, several of us plan to become martyrs for the cause by eating AP press releases until we die of ink poisoning. Onward!
Even if soccer didn't have commercials on during halftime, in many cases they still have the sponsor's logo in the corner of the screen, and that's advertising too. So is having the name of the sponsor on the uniforms.
High Comedy! Good times! I can't belive you responed to my insane post with the same Simpson's quote I used to respond to someone else's insane post last month!
Somehow I knew someone would post this when I heard the news. Hey SoccerScout, those things before, in the middle and after the game ... they're called commercials.
Maybe CBS will drop the Masters due to the pressure from the women's groups and devote more time to soccer.
Ok, well how do you define "commercial"? Every "Soccer Saturday" ESPN2 runs "commercials" at the bottom of the screen... scores for MLB, NFL, college football, etc... which, ofcourse, they are broadcasting on ABC, ESPN, ESPN2, Classic etc... And, ofcourse, this is a huge waste of space with respect to soccer. If we can't see SOCCER on the bottom of the screen, I'd much prefer to see that little Tecate guy running running around on the bottom scoring "gols" and selling beer. At least then maybe some advertising revenue could go to ESPN or MLS so we can have "Soccer Saturday" even after the start of college football season!
Re: Re: Soccer must not be a sport as per AP Yes. Heaven forbid someone in the media not put soccer in The Exalted Place of Greatest Things Ever. Get the hell over it.
Advertising != Commericial. Plus the play is UNINTERUPTED, which makes the game itself Commercial free, the broadcast isn't, but the game itself is.
So I guess those little logos up near the score and the mention that this portion of the match is brought to you by so-and-so, that's not advertising, right? What do you call it when you show a company's logo and say their name? A Public Service Announcement? See above.
