    So why am I doing this? Was is stroke of geneuss? well no I dont even know how to write it without the help of a spell check, which I dont have installed at the moment. (but hey, you allready geussed that)

    No it was a results of beeing bored, Im writing my cv, reading about the starting of mankind and the universe acoring to the sumerians, and programming a java football game (which is just for fun btw) at the same time... but I dont feel like doing any of them...

    So which music am I playing at the moment?
    Well some true cheesy anthem gabber:
    DJ Paul Elstak - Brohymn
    But hell its so sweet.

    And wasnt I the one who is switching country faster then girlfriend, and Iam living again in Friesland?
    Unfortunaly true and true, but not for long and my current gf wouldnt like to switch (i hope). Im rewritting my cv because Im trying to go to london within a few months for a few months, and if london fails I still have an open spot in Barcalona.
    So when the winter starts Im off again :)

    Dutch history quick course for beginners
    So Holland doenst equal Netherlands?

    What is Holland then?
    A few theories about this go around but the name Holland can be nailed to two possible sources the first one beeing that its actualy Houtland (woodland) written in Diets and beeing bastard by the ages.

    But the second is more intresting:
    Like you should know the vikings invaded the low lands often (destroying the first big city of the low lands: Dornstad), now is the theory that around the 10th century, Swedish vikings seteled, where the Rijn streams into the north sea, and formed the county of "Holland". Those vikings are then supposed to orginate from a Swedish county named "Halland" which besides the name also shares a very simulair weapon with "Holland"

    Ok.. so Holland started in 10th century but what is the Netherlands?
    Well as all vikings do, the Hallanders invaded... but this time they didnt only do that they also stayed in which was West Fryslân. But has this to do with the Netherlands?
    Well the point was to show that just like Germany and Italy the Netherlands are formed by combining counties and countries.
    The current Netherlands are sort of born during the war with Spain as an aliaings between 7 states
    (Holland, Frylân, Zeeland, Utrecht, Gelre, Groningen, Overijssel)
    Of which Holland and Fryslân as a distaned second were the richest.

    Intressing stuff :p

    Holland gave up its indepents in 1572 so calling the Netherlands Holland makes as much sense as calling Great Britan Wales.

    Interesting post Rutger.

    How did the word "Netherlands" get chosen?

    Netherlands==Nederland
    Neder=low
    Land=land
    Nederland==lowlands

    see :)

    Nederland means lowland in dutch, and I geuss netherlands is just a bastering of Nederland.

    Neder also means humble btw.

    George: "What is The Netherlands?"
    Jerry: "It's a country near Belgium."
    George: "And what is Holland?"
    Jerry: "It's the same country."
    George (frustrated & screaming): "Then who are The Dutch???

    I love that scene!

    Its a great show Rutger, give it a chance.

    Yeah,
    Maybe its humour is just too New Yorker for you, Rutger, but it's a great touch of sublime comedy.

    Great characters, too:

    Numan the fat neighbour...
    Jackie the attorney...
    jerry's uncle.....
    Elaine's boss......

    I've heard other people say they don't like Seinfeld but they are never Americans. Maybe you have to be from the USA to get it?

    Seinfeld is to much easy scoring with stereotypes, you'll never meet that idote in real life (well not in home, maybe in a carton box) Kramer that is... I think.

    Him is like a show where the funny bit is a fat dude blowing a partyhorn, to simple to ovious(sp?) to anoying.

    But not only him, George is that bold fat dude? And Jerry the every day average Joe? And his girl a fully emencipated smart goodlooking woman...
    Come on! this cast is even flather than the Netherland or even... friends.

    No Jisket is funny, and well I guess Blackadder since I bought all 5 seasons last week. Oh and the simpons and futurama are good. Uhh Family guy is good, King of the hill is ok. Malcom in the middle is funny. But Seinfeld no I rather watch the teletubbies... did you know the telletubbies speak proper english on the BBC. But on a dutch channel they speak totler Dutch... intressting isnt it :p

    Oh and Monty and the holly grail is great, "A whaaoot?.... A GRAAILLL???"
    Hilarious.

    RutgerB, I noticed Barcelona is a possible destination for you.

    How many languages do you know or would you have to learn Spanish/Catalunan?

    So the Vikings of Halland shared a very similar weapon.... I wonder if the Vikings ever encountered lions.

    Netherlands is not named Netherlands in the sense of 'lowlands'

    The name Netherlands was given to the area of NL and Belgium a long time ago by god knows who. It referred to the geographical situation of NL compared to where god knows who was situated.

    Some story eh? Anyway, this is now sort of like the official reading.

    Not quite right....

    The Netherlands is just plural for Netherland

    And it used to be that way in dutch too:

    In 1579 the "union of Utrecht", an alliance of districts, called 'gewesten', was formed. Those districts had been under habsburg rule but rebelled against their Spanish opppressors. After the Spanish recognised our independence, the 'republic of the seven united Netherlands (Republiek der zeven verenigde Nederlanden) was formed. It was basically a union or league like the US and Germany are today, in which each district had a fair deal of autonomy.....this situation remained until after the reign of Napoleon. After his defeat, the Vienna Congress made the netherlands a kingdom and thus a centralized state, the districts became provinces with no autonomy. Officially were still 'Kingdom of the Netherlands' but since we had become a centralized state, people started using Nederland instead of 'De Nederlanden'

    For some reaso, the english forgot to change it and therefore our country is still called 'The Netherlands' instead of 'Netherland' by english speaking peoples......
