After Week 37 With just one week to go, some things were resolved - Juventus is the champion while Palermo is in the UEFA Cup (only the 3rd time, after Parma and Chievo, that a newly-promoted team has won their way into Europe). In the relegation end, Cagliari, Livorno and Roma all guaranteed their safety in Serie A for next season while Atalanta is definitely down. 9 other teams are in the relegation zone or within one point of it. With endless tiebreaking possibilities (multiteam ties are worked out by mini-tables of the results against each other to get it down to 2 teams for a playoff), it's hard to tell if any of the teams on 43 points are really safe. But certainly the other half dozen teams are worried. I don't think Lazio, Lecce & Reggina - the teams that are currently on 43 points - are safe. Given the right (or wrong, depending on how you look at it) combination of results any of them could finish at least as badly as tied with the best of the relegation teams. So that would mean a playoff for salvation, I believe. 2 years ago the regular season finished with a 4-way tie between Modena, Empoli, Atalanta and Reggina in places 12-15. http://www.rsssf.com/tablesi/ital03.html Serie A was 18 teams then with the bottom 4 being relegated. I believe the league used head-to-head results (they clearly did not use overall goal differential) among those 4 teams to determine that Atalanta and Reggina were the weakest. They played off and Reggina won the home-and-away series to stay in Serie A. I remember they won the 2nd away leg after a scoreless first leg and a 1-day delay due to an intense hailstorm. The most confusing scenario for this season's end would be (I think) if Roma ties Chievo (Chievo moves up to 43), Inter beats Reggina (stays on 43), Palermo beats Lazio (stays on 43), Bologna (saves itself with 44) beats Sampdoria, Parma (saves itself with 44) beats Lecce (stays on 43), and Brescia (saves itself with 44) beats Fiorentina (would be relegated), and Siena (moves up to 43) beats already relegated Atalanta. I think this combination of results would lead to 5-way tie between Lazio, Lecce, Reggina, Chievo and Siena for places 14 thru 18. One team would have to go down. If Serie A keeps the same tiebreaker system used 2 years ago, the head-to-head results between all 5 teams would have to be used to determine the 2 that would have to face off in the relegation playoff.
These are te games from the possibel 43point-teams head-to-head! If Reggina, Lecce and Siena are tied at 43: Reggina 4pt 6-6 Lecce 4pt 6-6 Siena 4pt 6-6 What will be happening at this situation?????? If Reggina, Lecce, Siena and Chievo were tied at 43: Reggina 8pt 7-6 Lecce 7pt 10-8 Siena 7pt 9-8 Chievo 7pt 4-8 At this time Siena and Chievo will be playing for the last safe place! If Reggina, Lecce, Siena and Lazio were tied at 43: Reggina 8pt 9-8 Lecce 8pt 14-12 Siena 8pt 8-7 Lazio 3pt 9-13 At this time Siena and Lazio will be playing for the last safe place! If Reggina, Lecce, Siena, Lazio and Chievo were tied at 43: Reggina 12pt 10-8 Lecce 11pt 18-14 Siena 11pt 10-10 Lazio 6pt 10-14 Chievo 10pt 5-9 At this time Chievo and Lazio will be playing for the last safe place! If Lecce, Siena and Lazio were tied at 43: Lecce 6pt 11-9 Lazio 2pt 7-10 Siena 6pt 5-4 At this time Lazio and Siena will be playing for the last safe place If Lecce, Siena and Chievo were tied at 43: Lecce 5pt 7-5 Siena 5pt 6-5 Chievo 6pt 4-7 At this time Lecce and Siena will be playing for the last safe place If Siena, Lazio and Chievo were tied at 43: Siena 7pt 5-3 Lazio 4pt 2-3 Chievo 6pt 3-4 At this time Chievo and Lazio will be playing for the last safe place If Siena, Lecce, Lazio and Chievo were tied at 43: Siena 9pt 8-6 Lecce 9pt 15-11 Lazio 5pt 8-11 Chievo 9pt 5-8 At this time Chievo and Lazio will be playing for the last safe place! I think I had all the variations!
Thanks for doing this compilation!!! The next tiebreaker becomes total goal difference in all games. Currently, Lecce = -7, Reggina = -9 and Siena = -12. So it's likely it would be a playoff between Reggina and Siena although under this scenario Siena must win while the other two lose, so it'd come down to the scores in the last games. I really pray it does not come down to this one!
"If Siena, Lazio and Chievo were tied at 43: Siena 7pt 5-3 Lazio 4pt 2-3 Chievo 6pt 3-4 At this time Chievo and Lazio will be playing for the last safe place" This variation isn't important, because at that time Pama would have less than 43 points and Fiorentina as well, so Siena, Lazio, and Chievo will reach at this time the salvation! Reggina must stay in the Serie A!!!! FORZA REGGIO!!!

For reasons that are not clear, the FIGC nominated Lazio first and Livorno second to play in the Intertoto Cup. UEFA's regulations required that Livorno start in the second round, so Livorno did not accept the invitation. - Fiorentina won the 3-team tiebreaker with Parma and Bologna based on head-to-head results. - Bologna was relegated following a playoff with Parma (1-0, 0-2).
