    Well, what you have to take into consideration is that everyone (except you apparently) knows that when you go to take a shit, you have to pull one leg out of your pants so that if someone tries to jump you mid-shit, you're able to defend yourself without getting tangled in your pants.

    This is how I found it.

    Also, I'm wondering if the Senator did indeed not solicit sex. I bet it was an illegal campaign donation, money from dealing drugs, or possibly drugs that the Senator was ploying for. When he got caught and understood the charge as "lewd disorderly conduct" rather than any sort of drug charge, he ate it up and thought he could get away with it. Nothing to base this on, just throwing it out there.

    Yeah, that's a pretty solid choice. You could also go with the Birmingham booty call, I've always been a big fan of that one, just never wanted to ruin a good cell phone.

    One of the Slate articles I linked to earlier said that in the 70's men in department store restrooms would stand (or, I guess sit) with their legs in shopping bags, thus concealing that there's more than one person in a stall. That struck me as hilarious and kinda clever.

    The only valid (non trawling for airport ass) reason I can think of if true, is that he didn't want his nice slacks on the floor...which would pretty much out him as gay anyway. :)

    Craig gets caught soliciting gay sex in a bathroom: Calls for his expulsion and resignation from his GOP peers.

    Nope, no inconsistency here.

    Louisiana = Democratic Governor
    Idaho = Republican Governor

    GOP leaders calling for Craig's resignation are doing so because there's no downside, as the Governor gets to name the replacement. It's a safe move because they can play to the (homophobic) base.

    Vitter gets the silent treatment because the GOP doesn't want to lose another seat.

    Well, there's that angle for sure.

    But I think the most important fact, insofar as resignation chatter, is that Craig plead guilty to a crime and Vitter didn't.

    Then there's the fact that, though what Vitter did was by nature secretive, he did come forward when it became clear he'd be outed and worked with GOP leadership. Never underestimate the power of personal relationships in politics--GOP leaders in DC are absolutely livid that they've been blindsided by this and Craig tried to cover it up.

    Also, as to the implication about this being a gay vs. straight thing. I look at it this way. If Craig had solicited a gay escort in DC and Vitter had been trolling for anonymous sex in the ladies' bathroom in Charlotte airport, who do you think the GOP would be pushing to resign? I think it's the nature of the act--not the sexual orientation--that's the issue here.

    Finally, there was some talk about a Vitter resignation in GOP circles, but it certainly wasn't as public.
