Boy, you're taking the party line hook, line, and sinker. Really? A professional soccer player is unable to comprehend the genius of MA's tactics without a full pre-season? That seems like pretty specious reasoning to me. Somehow, NFL QBs can be traded from one team to another with a vastly different offensive playbook, and they manage the transition in less than a full season. I smell a lot of BS here...
I think it has more to do with supreme fitness and timing. Neither Rios or Fierro were able to significantly impact games. Even players returning from international duty looked off for a game or two. Of course there was also Lima who missed preseason training and struggled to fit in all season.
I'm trying to think of the last NFL QB who was traded mid-season and led his new team to the playoffs.
My comparison in inapt anyway - because there is nobody on an 11-person soccer squad nearly as important to the team as a whole as a handegg QB. Frankly, this idea that MA has fitness secrets is also sort of silly, given that the science of training and sports medicine has been and is currently being exhaustively studied in places like the AC Milan lab, etc. Like the song says: "I say it's all just wind in sails. Are we not men?"
We're going to suck like a Dyson. I'm going to predict that we finish the season with nine fewer points than last year, at least, maybe more. Best case here is that we don't suck so hard at the beginning of the season as we did last year. BUT, that will be leavened by the fact that other teams in our league have figured us out. Also, those teams have done more to improve than we have (not all of those programs will be successful at improving those other teams). And I don't expect any better treatment from the refs than last season. So losing three more games than last season, I think, is to be expected. It might be much worse. Go Quakes!! Fisher OUT!!! - Mark
Tarbell off the books, but I think a fair argument could be made we are still one too many in the goalkeeper department. Though 4 is acceptable, 5 was rediculous. Good trade for Columbus, I think both teams benefited from it.
Carson Palmer was traded to the raiders mid season, had very little time to learn the raiders playbook, got thrust into the team super quickly, and threw three interceptions almost immediately in his first game. QBs almost never move mid season and play after arriving, not starting caliber quarterbacks at least
Well, we have been complaining about the lack of signings, but we have also been complaining about how our money and spots are being used. With Tarbell moving to the Crew today we open one roster slot and probably about $250k in cap space, with $75k in GAM on top of it. I think we now have options that were simply not possible earlier. ________ Salary Budget Roster 1. Daniel Vega #17 (G) (Argentina, INT) {6/3/84} [$210K] 2. So with the open slot what’s the consensus position we should be on the lookout for with that new roster spot
See, now you guys are just piling on. Of all the roster issues with Quakes, GK isn't one of them. Vega has proven himself as starting MLS quality. JT is an up and comer. Bersano is a legit backup. I'm not even adding the 14 year old in the discussion because frankly he's a non-factor. They filled the roster gap at CB. To me the next glaring hole is a goal scorer. We have none, other than that 35 year old.
Welcome Jack Skahan! This is not exactly what I htought we might do with our final roster spot, but of couse he is part of a lot of youth that we can loan to Reno to make space should we want to go big. I am happy to see the draft taken seriously this year. Yes, we only picked three of five possible spots, but we did sign our top two. Here's to hoping that both Tanner and Jack are the real deal. ________ Salary Budget Roster 1. Daniel Vega #17 (G) (Argentina, INT) {6/3/84} [$210K] 2. Matt Bersano # 12 (G) {9/10/92} [$71.7K] 3. I'm posting this here because it is related to player compensation... David Ornstein in the Athletic had an interesting write-up on Arsenal and player compensation. It turns out that most players in the big EPL teams get bonuses for each round of Champions League, which can amount to 25% of their salaries. In the case of Arsenal, in 2017 they started failing to qualify for CL and ended up in Europa League. But their contracts had no stipulation for Europa bonuses because Arsene Wenger wanted the team to only concentrate on CL. The club and players (led by Per Mertesacker) subsequently decided that they would only get bonuses if they won the Europa league, and not for each round of play. I was just surprised CL could be such a large part of a player's compensation.
Very lucrative competition. https://www.uefa.com/uefachampionsl...rrer=/uefachampionsleague/news/newsid=2616268
It's the superbowl of soccer. Actually it's way better than the superbowl because its intra-league competition. Theoretically the club world cup should be the most important competition but all the best teams are in UEFA.
I had trouble understanding that article, is it: clubs get €15M for making the 32-team group stage clubs get €5M for making the 12-team playoffs What else am I missing?
