Because the whole point of MLS was to develop American players. Look at the EPL. Best league in the world, but England underperforms because the country's own players can't play in their own top league. But as MLS gets better, we turn into a development league for African, Central and South American countries, because those players are better and usually cheaper than American players, who aren't willing to live on $35k if they have a college degree. They have other options, but players coming from under-developed countries have no other options. It just burns me that American players have to go play in European 2nd and 3rd divisions to get playing time cuz they cant get it in MLS and with a reasonable salary
No, Donovan is a native Canadian. "Donovan was born (along with twin sister Tristan) on March 4, 1982 in Ontario, California to Donna Kenney-Cash, a special education teacher, and Tim Donovan, a semi-professional ice hockey player originally from Canada, which makes Donovan a Canadian citizen by descent."
Save it? Anecdotal evidence doesn't mean s***. Of course, but that is a completely meaningless statement. All teams, but particularly the Quakes, have limited time and resources. They can't just scout every player in the world, in every league in the world... there are opportunity costs. If anyone should know that it's Quakes fans, our front office went to Europe in the 2015-16 offseason to scout potential DPs and came back with... Simon Dawkins, who they already knew and who wasn't doing jack in the English second division. If Jesse F thinks this team needs to bring in, say, a central attacking midfielder as a DP over the summer, should he "be open to good players from anywhere" and send Quakes scouts to watch the Trinidadian league? Would that be a good allocation of resources?
Not to quibble, but I'd argue that La Liga is the best league in the world--and the Spanish national team seems to do ok. La Liga also has more domestic players than any other major European league. Clearly, Spain does something right in developing players that England does not do. So maybe having so many Brits involved with our soccer at all levels isn't the best approach for developing U.S. players.
http://www.espnfc.com/story/3117680...targeting-krasnodars-mauricio-pereyra-sources 2nd tier Russian team, not even ten years old...but an attacking midfielder?
"In a bid to bolster their meager attack, the San Jose Earthquakes have set their sights on FC Krasnodar attacking midfielder Mauricio Pereyra, according to multiple league sources." I like that we're going after an attacking midfielder who is South American (Uruguay, played for Lanus in Argentina) and in his prime (27)... One question: DP or TAM? If this is our big DP signing, that would be disappointing... are we still pursuing Salomon Kalou? More info on Pereyra: Wikipedia Transfermarkt
Yeah, I'm not sure if he's even as good as Hyka. About the same size. Just don't see it moving the needle. More of the same kind of player that we already have.
Pereyra is listed as 5'7". That's the same height as Mauro Diaz. Of course Kinnear would probably play Alashe over Diaz...
If he would play a 5'7" player in the middle then he could have with our current "#10" or with MPG. So it is doubtful.
Thanks for raising the game off the pitch Dave, and welcome to our new president Tom Fox. ____________________ Salary Budget Roster 1. David Bingham, #1 (GK) {10/19/89} [$197.8K] 2. San Jose has 3 DP's--Wondo, Dawkins and Qazaishvili. Wondo's status reverted to DP for the 2017 season. https://www.mlssoccer.com/glossary/designated-player
@Seismothusiast please update to remove Kinnear and Spencer. The Quakes dropped a few spots in the allocation order in exchange for $175k in allocation money.... Revs swap allocation spots with Earthquakes. Revs get 2, SJ gets 5 and $175k GAM New England Revolution trade the fifth spot in the allocation rankings and $175,000 of General Allocation Money for San Jose Earthquakes' second spot in the allocation rankings and either $175,000 in Targeted Allocation Money or $100,000 in GAM and $75,000 in TAM to be received in January 2018. Apparently the Revs are looking to acquire some player that is subject to the allocation order... https://www.mlssoccer.com/allocation
Maybe we need to start a "The Official Targeted Allocation Money" thread to discuss this. I would like to better understand what any of this means to the club in the long run.
There are two kinds of allocation money, GAM: https://www.mlssoccer.com/glossary/general-allocation-money and as of a few years ago, TAM: https://www.mlssoccer.com/glossary/targeted-allocation-money TAM is used to buy down players whose salaries / transfer fees are above the DP threshold so they don't count as DPs (since there is a limit of 3 DPs per roster), TAM players on the Quakes are Hyka, Hoesen, and Jungwirth. Full list here: https://www.mlssoccer.com/media-resources/2017-targeted-allocation-money-players What this means is the Revs are most likely looking to acquire one of the 20 or so players listed here that are subject to the allocation process: https://www.mlssoccer.com/allocation (players transferred from MLS to other leagues for a fee, some members of the USMNT or USYNTs) For the Quakes, it could mean one of three things: -Buying down an existing DP (Wondo or Dawkins) to non-DP levels -Using GAM/TAM to acquire some other player besides Vako in this transfer window -Having no plans to bring in a player off the allocation list, just pocketing the money for later use I'm guessing it's number two... maybe a CB that fits into how Leitch wants to play.
It looks like the GAM/TAM we are getting is for next year. Seems like we are selling for value while we can.
Oops, I forgot about that part, January 2018. I'll stick with my prediction (a Bernardez replacement at CB), just in the offseason instead of now.
I read as the Quakes get this THIS year AND this in 2018 Edit to add: From MLSsoccer.com The Allocation Ranking Order is set by taking the reverse order of the club’s standings at the end of each MLS Season, taking playoff performance into account, with the new expansion clubs at the top of the order. Once the club uses its allocation ranking to acquire a player, it drops to the bottom of the list. A ranking can be traded, provided that part of the compensation received in return is the other club’s ranking. At all times, each club is assigned one ranking. The rankings reset at the end of each MLS League season. Since the rankings reset each year it would seem that it is this years spot that New England is getting in exchange for the 175K TAM THIS year, with another 175K to be eithar all TAM or a combination of TAM and GAM money in JAN 2018.
My reading of the trade is that the Quakes get these two things now: 1. The fifth spot in the allocation rankings. 2. $175K in GAM. In exchange, New England gets the following: 1. The second spot in the allocation rankings and one of the following two things in January, 2018: 2a. $175K TAM; or 2b. Both $100K GAM + $75 TAM. It's a really baffling deal. I suppose that if the allocation rank has zero value (i.e. the Quakes know for a fact that they will not sign an allocation), then there is a small advantage to having money now instead of next January. But it seems like such a minor point. Maybe they just need it to make the books balance on the new DP.
That would be my guess, though can they sign the guy and then make the books balance later? I mean what if they couldn't pull off the trade?
My understanding is that you don't have to always be in compliance with MLS rules. I'm basing this on teams adding DPs until they have more than the three max, and then dealing with it later. That definitely happened with the mediocre Brazilian striker Gilberto, either in Toronto or Chicago. I think there are dates (probably twice a year) by which you have to be compliant with all roster and salary cap rules. So to answer your question, if this had fallen through I'm guessing the Quakes would still have plenty of time to pull off another trade, or drop a player, or do whatever they needed to do, to be compliant by a date that I'm guessing is after the end of the transfer window. But Vako has already been signed, so if this trade was necessary to balance the books, clearly they weren't balanced until this trade was made, and there were no consequences...
