Ohio State's is really annoying. On OT against NCSU, they played that song after every single OSU play. That was not only excessive, but it got stuck in my head the rest of the weekend. I can't say much about Texas', it sounds like "I've Been Working On The Railroad"
Rocky Top???? To each his own, I suppose. My most hated is the USC Trojans' Conquest. I'm not sure if that's their official fight song, but their band plays it incessantly during games. However, when they play it and beat a big ten team, it's not so bad.
Well, I'm partial to Missouri's fight song because it's ingrained in my memory from childhood. But I have to give props to Michigan, Notre Dame and USC. Respect bordering on hatret, that is. But I reserve the hate for North Carolina's most irritating "Tar Heel born, Tar Heel bred, and when I die I'll be Tar Heel dead". Ack.
Besides BC, I think the catchy ones, in no particular order, are Texas, Tennessee, Southern Cal (both Conquest and the actual school song), Michigan, Ohio St., Oklahoma, Georgia, even Notre Dame's (when binge-drinking shots of SoCo) Sometimes it is worth $50+ for EA College Football.
It comes from my memories of watching Tennessee beat Florida in Neyland stadium in 1998. I loved the sound and sight of all those fans singing Rocky Top after the game. It thought it was specatcular.
I like Notre Dame's (obviously). I have a great respect for Michigan's and I like Oklahoma's too. I do not like Texas (they swiped "I've been workinj on the railroad") or Georgia ("Glory glory hallelujah" - can we get more creative?) oe Tennessee ("Rocky Top" makes me think of that really lousy movie starring Kenny Rogers as a race car driver in the early/mid-80s that was on HBO constantly). I don't mind USC's fight song, but they play that damned "Conquest" after every first down.
I love Penn State but, Fight on State is not a good fight song. "The Nittany Lion" rules but that is not a fight song. Anyway favorite fight songs: Michigan USC (Southern Cal) Oklahoma Wisconsin Most overrated fight song like everything else about the school: Notre Dame
A&M has to have the only fight song that's ABOUT ANOTHER SCHOOL: Good-bye to Texas University. So long to the Orange and White. Good luck to the dear old Texas Aggies, They are the boys who show the real old fight. The eyes of Texas are upon you. That is the song they sing so well, So, good-bye to Texas University, We're goin' to beat you all to -- Chig-gar-roo-gar-rem! Chig-gar-roo-gar-rem! Rough! Tough! Real stuff! Texas A&M!
http://www.fightsongs.com/ This site used to have all the songs but I think the colleges caught on and stopped leting the site use them. There still are a few you can hear. By the way, Rocky Top is not the offical fight song of UT. Of the ones not listed so far I like Alabama's "Yeah Alabama"
You hate it because you know it's the best. And it's most likely the only college fight song to be ever plagiarized by a town in Wales. Rah rah, Carolina-lina Rah rah, Carolina-lina...
I'm sure you're not the first person to be annoyed by those smug bastards in Chapel Hill In honor of the whipping that awaits your beloved alma mater on Saturday. Go to hell, Carolina! http://members.aol.com/mikeappert/NC_State__Block_State_Fanfare__Red_and_White.mp3
Hey, at least we learned our fight song by reading the words, not phonetically. And yes, you will most likely whup our collective asses, but you will still be State and Chapel Hill will remain the Southern Part of Heaven.
Thank you El Jefe. Why the hell do schools have a fight song and an alma mater BTW? Just curious, don't mean anything by it.
Alma mater is simply an official song of school pride and often wasn't originally meant for sporting events. The fight song is generally more unofficial, often written specifically for sporting events. In UNC's case, "Hark the Sound" became the alma mater in 1897 and the fight song, "I'm a Tar Heel Born" was added to the end in 1930s. Today, the fight song is part of the alma mater but during games, the band usually just plays the fight song after big plays.
Also, an alma mater is usually more regal sounding and solemn, while fight songs are all very peppy and lively.
I'm partial to Cal's "Big C", whose tune is better known as UCLA's "Sons of Westwood." The "Big C" is played at every game, even though the lyrics refer to a certain school across the bay. http://www.calband.berkeley.edu/calband/multimedia/calsongs/bigc.html
There are many many great fight songs. I didn't go to a division 1-A school but over the years, I've learned to appreciate some of the great fight songs. In no particular order these are the ones that catch my attention. 1. Notre Dame (simply out of tradition) "Cheer, cheer for ole Notre Dame wake up the echoes cheering your name. Send the volley cheer on high, shake down the thunder from the sky. But though the odds be great or small, ole Notre Dame will win over all while her loyal sons are marching onto victory." 2. Florida State University - Warchant While FSU isn't the force that it was in the late 1990s, the "warchant" certainly evokes a lot of adrenaline. It's popularity has even reached Turkey where the football club of Galatasaray has adopted it as an unofficial piece of music to pump up players. 3. Nebraska - There's No Place Like Nebraska 4. Illinois - Three In One (song played at half-time to which Chief Illiniwek dances to) 5. Ohio State University I have no idea what the name of the song is but it was that one they played on every play during the over-time against the "Wolfpack" (NCSU).
