Subbed out in the 60th. Don't see evidence about why anywhere. Was tied 1-1 when he came off, now 2-2.

This is the first time I'm hearing of this guy, and he's 29. Not only is he starting in the 2 BL, but his ratings on the season indicate he's doing very well, so may be able to hack it at higher levels too. Here's his #'s from today's game:

It'd be a great, Jay Demerit-esque story, if he managed to back door some semblance of a top level and nat'l team career at such a late age, after climbing the ranks in a major European country.

He ended up starting 18 of the last 20 league matches. He definitely took the road less traveled and certainly has to be proud of his journey. A former D3 player ascending up the German lower levels all the way to becoming a starter in the 2. Bundesliga - just great stuff. Hopefully the momentum carries into next season.

Also, saw there was an interview with him on the club's YouTube channel from a few weeks ago for those who speak German:

yes, Ryan extended his contract for another year at Hansa Rostock in 2 Bundesliga through 2023, and yes, he started in the last 18 of 20 games last season helping secure Hansa Rostock in the 2 Bundesliga. As you know, its a difficult task to maintain the league the first year in it. Ryan is my son-in-law and he was recruited by a few German clubs in his senior year of Springfield college in 2015. so yes, he definitely took the road less traveled. his first year in Germany (with my daughter) was for a third division team called FC Magdeburg. Hansa Rostock is currently in training (heading to Austria next week) as we speak and their first game of the new season is mid July. any questions, please ask. dean

This potentially unreadable team sheet shows Malone starting. They lead 2-0 at half against St Pauli without conceding a shot on goal, so seems like they're doing fine.

He's playing right now vs. Karlsruher and they're getting crushed.

No one seems to care though.

Malone started this morning and got a 7.5 on Fotmob. Subbed off in the 75th as part of a formation change, which helped find a late equalizer for a 1-1 draw.

I totally missed this! Over the years we've had posts from Yanks Abroad players, agents, parents, friends, random weirdos -- but this might be the first one we've had from an in-law. There's probably a bad joke to be made, but unfortunately I'm no good at bad jokes. ;)

Malone comes on. Look at that timing - 45+8 minute? Third Rostock defender subbed out in the first half? Hope there's not some nasty injury underlying this. In any case, three Yanks simultaneously on the field in a BL2 game and Malone presumably gets to play the second half. 1-0 lead for Furth.

In a game he didn't start, he had to come on as one of three first half defensive replacements due to injury, and Rostock went down a man midway through the second half...

Malone is the penalty taker for Rostock? 93rd minute penalty to equalize against Furth. 2-2 full time.

Also - this was a four-yank match. Nils Froling, born in Dallas, also subbed on for Rostock. He's a Swedish youth player, but still...
