Rutgers Defeats American, 4-1, at Wachovia Challenge http://www.scarletknights.com/soccer-women/news/gamepr.asp?prID=12
Rutgers loses to Maryland 5-2. AWESOME goals by Carli Lloyd and Lissette Brandao. Rutgers D didnt mark up and hold strong and fell to 3 breakaway type goals. Maryland played VERY well, props to them.
Great goal by and great ball skills by Lloyd. Loved the back heel nutmeg. Just a really great player who needs better service. Should play in the middle to allow Schubert to pass the ball to her. Anyway, great goal by Lissette. The goalkeeper should not have been off her line so far though. Anyway, Maryland played well and Rutgers' defense didn't react well on the counterattacks. Still all in all, it was closer than 5-2.
I got to see about 30 minutes of the match in the 2nd half when it was 2-2 onwards. Lloyd has skills to project to WUSA. And Mahar, the central defender from Maryland can make WUSA rosters. Givens is frightenly TWO steps too slow. If she had better mobility, she could play too.
Carli also plays for the U21 National Team. Shes a very good player who netted yet another BEAUTIFUL goal today.
I don't get to see much womens college soccer, so when I stumbled into Maryland and Rutgers on TV, I was curious. The one chance when Lloyd was in alone on the keeper and just shot a foot wide, I liked the composure she showed, and not getting upset by missing the chance What year is she? Junior? And repeating myself, Mahar, the central defender for Maryland, I thought has talent for WUSA too, some nice ball skills and size and mobility.
In answering my own question, Lloyd is a soph. And Mahar from Maryland is a freshman. She's a player to watch.
Another player to watch for RU is Kim Brandao. She is a starting center back, and is only a freshman. Nothing got by her in the Delaware game and I predict her to improve even more of the rest of this year and her next three.

I was going to go to the Georgetown game but something came up. Too bad. Will the Big East tournament be anywhere close by? I see a game at Penn State is coming up but that's too far.
