    Shinnik hold Spartak as fans clash

    MOSCOW, July 20 (Reuters) - Russian champions Spartak Moscow failed to close the gap on premier league leaders Lokomotiv after being held to a 2-2 draw at mid-table Shinnik Yaroslavl on Saturday.
    The match was marred by clashes between police and several hundred Spartak supporters - considered some of the most violent in the country - who made the short trip to Yaroslavl, about 200 kilometres east of Moscow.

    Russian television showed riot police charging the visiting fans after Shinnik scored their second goal early in the second half. No injuries or arrests were reported.

    Spartak remained in third place with 30 points from 16 games, five points adrift of city rivals Lokomotiv. Another Moscow side, CSKA, were second on 32 points, but have two games in hand.

    The draw also snapped Spartak's five-game winning streak.

    Spartak's 19-year-old striker Dmitry Kudryashov opened the scoring with a simple tap-in from close range in the 41st minute after being set up by Vladimir Beschastnykh.

    Dmitry Khomukha equalised from a penalty three minutes later before Rakhmatullo Fuzailov put Shinnik 2-1 ahead with a 25-metre shot into the top corner in the 53rd minute.

    But Kudryashov, playing in place of injured 18-year-old Russia striker Dmitry Sychyov, levelled the score again with another long-range effort 20 minutes from time.

    The match was moved forward two months to ease fixture congestion for Spartak who will also be playing in the Champions League.

    In Elista, a hat-trick by Alexander Kerzhakov - Russia's leading scorer this season - could only earn Zenit St Petersburg a 3-3 draw against local side Uralan.

    Kerzhakov struck in the 19th, 45th and 87th minutes to take his tally to 13 goals. The 19-year-old striker has now scored in seven straight games to equal the Russian league record.

    Yes, once again, in spite of Kerzhakov's heroics, the annual Zenit slide has seemingly once again begun. The back line is once again looking pretty damned suspect, and at this point in time I would have to say the Yugoslavian Corps has been an abject failure. The earlier loss vs. Saturn-REN was totally unacceptable.

    Not the best way to lead into UEFA Cup. Only a win vs. Spartak @ Petrovskiy will right the ship.
