He was a much more complete player that's for sure which is why he can fit so many roles. Not to say that is because Arriola is a bad player, he is not but didn't have the kind of skill Rubin had when he was on form. I really hope Rubio can regain that form cuz he'll instantly be one of our best prospects once again.
Do you watch Arriola play? It's not a stretch. Well, it's all hypothetical now. I look foward to seeing Rubio play again in the coming months.
I mean, Arriola is a somewhat limited specialist in terms of role in a system, who isn't all that special. One of Rubin's most common critiques as he was attempting to break into the Eredivisie was that he was a somewhat limited generalist, who also wasn't all that special. I guess we reflect on the time differently. I don't recall this great form you guys seem to recall. He was an 18yo getting decent minutes to scrappy effect, which was outstanding given his age, the level of competition, and our player pool. Just because we disagree doesn't mean I'm making baseless assumptions. I said your post was a hot take because I think it was pretty obviously a reactionary response to Rubin's first meaningful competitive minutes in literally years. I just find it particularly interesting that you remember him being so vastly superior to Arriola years ago. I don't remember it that way, whether in their play in their respective leagues at the time, or at the 2015 U20 WC where they were both solid, non-spectacular, role players you expected to start.
I've been whining in this thread about Rubio and what ifs since he got injured. And I was just comparing him to Arriola really because they played on the same club, lol.
We'll I'm 100% with you in just wanting to see him healthy and successful. If he can make an immediate impact on Liga MX that would be huge.
Rubio is on the bench tonight for Tijuana. They have a game on Friday so he'll probably get the start then.

Yes. 3-1 final to Tijuana. I am genuinely shocked that Rubin is getting any playing time outside Copa MX. Good for him.
Me too. Which was why I asked. When he signed, I thought the Copa MX PT, plus garbage minutes against good teams and non-garbage minutes against garbage teams in the CCL was the best to be hoped for. Of the two Liga MX games he's been eligible for, he's had one start (where he went 90') and was subbed in on the hour (which is usually tactical) in the other. The coach obviously likes what he's been seeing and wants to find out more. Liga MX isn't the BL or LaLiga, but it's at least as good as the Eredivisie top half. If he even becomes a regular rotator in Mexico, he's reached the level everyone was hoping for when he broke through at Utrect.
Brain fart in the last post. He's been eligible for seven Liga MX games, and has made the squad for the last two.
He played LW and had one especially good moment where he timed a run off the RB's shoulder but his outside of the right foot low cross was deflected out for a corner.

Came on as a sub at halftime, didn't do much. One shot, missed. Passes weren't great either. I'm happy, neutral observers shouldn't be.
