on the Swedish League threat, it says that Veronica Boquete of Tyreso has signed with the Thorns. Is this true?
Outside of Faby, I don't think the other three have value to the NWSL. I'm mean we are talking Maurine here, and you see how that worked in WNY. I'm not sure Thaisa could get traction with a NWSL club. Thaisa and Rilany will go back to Ferroviaria I suppose. Faby will definitely go back to Sao Jose with Formiga. I can't say with Maya. They all come from Foz but I don't believe Foz has a club anymore. I'll have to look into it but the Foz girls are all spread out right now.
Tyresö is only terminating/not prolonging four contracts that needed to be renewed during the summer (not including the three Americans that was already scheduled to leave after WCL). They are keeping the rest, at least until end of season. Marta, Vero, Seger and one more they haven't mentioned is released mid-season but the last one is probably not one of the new Brazilians since they was signed on so recently. Edit: Found out that the fourth player should be the GK Carola Söberg
I was checking to see how McCall Zerboni was going to fit into Portland and saw that the Thorns Roster page has 22 names on it. Which players are not coming back? If the Thorns traded their picks for a player, then who is getting cut from the roster? BTW, I think that this a a great opportunity for Zerboni and hope she kicks ass, except against WNY of course.
Acevedo and Vero. Acevedo wont be allocated again so theyd have to sign her. Vero is under contract with Frankfurt. Still not sure what happened with McDonald so she may also be under contract to Herforder or may be on double secret loan.
My understandings: Acevedo is gone. Vero is likely, and wants, to come back but it's not settled yet and, if it occurs, it will be only later in the season. McDonald is under contract to the Thorns and is on loan.
Tweet from Jody Taylor says she's "extremely excited to be joining" the Thorns, so I guess any doubts about whether she'll play for them can be set aside. She'll, of course, most likely be missing for WWC duty.
So confused. So theoretically you could have an entire team made of international players, if you keep trading to pick up other teams slots?
In theory you could if you wanted to trade your US allocated players for allocated players from Mexico and Canada. Riley says in the paper today, by the way, that the Thorns have five international spots. That would be Angerer, Boquete, Catley, Taylor, and the one additional player they are talking about bringing in. Plus they have three Canadian allocated players in Sinclair, Kyle, and Wilkinson. So, the could start eight non-US players. The internationals from 2014, by the way, are big fan favorites -- Angerer, Boquete, and Catley. When my 11-year old granddaughter soccer player heard that the Thorns had traded for one of her personal favorite former U of Portland players Kendall Johnson, her first question was to be sure the Thorns weren't trading Angerer or Boquete.
Smart girl. You don't trade away Angerer or Boquete. They already have Morgan. No need to trade Angerer or Boquete for anyone else in the entire league. Unless they would get Stephanie McCaffrey in return.
Thorns announce 31-player preseason roster. G (3): Nadine Angerer, Michelle Betos, *Emily Kruger D (12): Stephanie Catley, Rachel van Hollebeke, Kat Williamson, Emily Menges, Kendall Johnson, Courtney Niemiec, Rhian Wilkinson, Kaylyn Kyle, *Savanah Coiner, *Sarah Jackson, *Alyssa Kleiner, *Meredith Speck, M (9): Allie Long, Sinead Farrelly, McCall Zerboni, Meleana Shim, Tobin Heath, Sarah Robbins, *Chelsea Archer, *Kate Bennett, *Taylor Comeau F (7): Alex Morgan, Christine Sinclair, Genoveva Anonma, Jodie Taylor, Hanna Terry, *Kelsey Haycook, *Zuri Prince * non-roster invitee No Kat Tarr. Also no Danesha Adams. Was she cut? Traded? Retired?
Adams tweeted this: I think when she was selected off waivers the conjecture was she was trade bait. Tarr may not yet be healed from her Knee surgery.
What I saw about Tarr was she was going to be available as a fill in player this year but not on the roster.
Interesting set of tweets from Paulson: Says the Thorns won't be having players on their roster unless the Thorns are their #1 club commitment. They may have national team commitments, but they can't have their primary club commitment be to another club, i.e., a club somewhere outside the US. This may rule out Vero although there's not a final decision there yet, but it's looking less likely. Bummer about Vero, if it doesn't work out, as she's one of the most entertaining players in the world to watch.
I think there are three involved: Paulson, Riley, and Gavin Wilkinson (general manager). I think they're all involved. In relation to Vero, the possibility they seem to have rejected is that she would be available after the WWC, but would have to leave for her Euro club before the NWSL playoffs. It's too bad, but it makes sense. And, the policy applies to allocated players too, so it seems to fit with what appears to be the USSF policy. I don't know the extent to which other NWSL teams are doing the same thing, but in terms of really establishing the league as the premier league in the world it makes sense.
I don't have a problem with that, especially since Portland is a pretty popular destination. Why waste one of the limited roster spots on a player who will only be there for part of a season when there are many others who will be there all season?
