This thread is meant more for TRACKING who's in and who's out. I just stole this from Wikipedia. No. Pos. Here it is again, without all the lame ass hyperlinks. I'm going to try to color code, but maybe y'all can help. In particular, I'm really bad with which of the internationals have green cards and homegrown status. Underline = consistent 1st team player 2022 (subbed in or would have been without injury) Light Blue = not 1st team / default Green = international w/ green card (if also a homegrown or USA dual national, then just the nation is green) Red = International Slot Orange = Homegrown Status (not just a homegrown player) Strikethough = gone (highlight the player, click on the box with the + inside, click on strikethough) No. Pos. https://www.mlssoccer.com/clubs/real-salt-lake/roster/ I would use this to start. Damir has a green card/isn't using an international slot. Luna is listed as a HG. Brody may still count as a HG, would be nice to clarify. The Expansion draft list should provide that info. Hopefully Jasper, Sava and Ruiz get their green card soon. To bring up a sore subject, can ownership get that 8th international slot back? This team needs help and not a lot of roster spots are available. Will be interesting to see who goes. Possible senior roster spot openings: Gomez, Menendez (currently not in use as he's on loan), Rubin, Kappelhof, Besler, Chang, Meram, Wood. It's very unlikely that this team can add difference makers that don't use a senior roster spot, so that's where subtractions will have to come from. How many more Luna's can they find or is there a HG worth trading for that doesn't require a senior roster spot?
Well, geez! That's much more efficient than my silly list. I've clicked on the roster page before, but I guess I forgot that it contained all that pertinent info.
I know that's tongue in cheek, but for clarification, I meant there's only so many players that can actually contribute that don't use a senior roster spot. Luna is not on the senior roster. It's unlikely they can add more players at his level or better than don't count towards the salary budget (senior roster players).
Yes, tongue in cheek, and it does seem to look like RSL has some pretty hard work to do to make improvements on this roster.
Guys that maybe shouldn't be back with their salary/impact: Besler, Caldwell, Gomez (senior roster spot), Kappelhof, Menendez, Meram, Rubio, Wood. Guys that probably just aren't good enough: Garica, Halsey, Holt, Schmitt Guys that might be overpaid: Herrera, Julio, Kreilach (I thought that number made him an automatic DP), Ruiz, Silva and Savarino (top 30ish paid player). Hopefully they are no longer paid by RSL after this year: Putna Do you bring them back and at what cost (salary and/or transfer fee)?: Cordova, Musovski, Ojeda Feel free to disagree. I'm sure there are free agents and option years we don't know about yet.
It's not always true, but transfermarkt seems to have some info. It usually checks out compared to press releases .
one of the weirder quirks of MLS is that this information isn't public given all contracts are signed with the league, this should be a really easy fix...
It's typically non-public but in Rubio Rubin's case the club announced it when he signed his last extension. https://www.mlssoccer.com/news/real-salt-lake-ink-rubio-rubin-to-multi-year-contract-extension
Also with Bobby Wood this article indicates his contract is "through 2023" but doesn't clarify if it's an option year. Either way, I think Rubio would be a more expensive buyout than Wood due to the extra guaranteed year, if we're thinking about doing a buyout. If we were going to buy someone out, personally I would lean towards buying out Wood over Rubio. https://www.mlssoccer.com/news/real-salt-lake-sign-us-striker-bobby-wood-to-pre-contract
Why RSL made the playoffs: By getting starter quality performance from Chang, Brody and Loeffelsend (and arguably Ruiz, Cordova and Meram) at bargain prices. I'm not even ripping on Besler this year, because we have worse (or more jinxed) subs...and honestly, Nicky B was solid in that final match.
He was! I endorse this post. Löffelsend, Brody, Chang, and Meram all had pretty fantastic seasons. I think Meram ended the season on the bench because Pablo had worn him out. Ojeda took the pressure off of him.
Disagree. I think he is a solid bench option, especially for that price, on the wing. I'd rather he played something like 500-700minutes max per season as a depth piece, but his numbers the last couple of years are good.
This is a tough one and may simply come down to roster numbers and roster cost. I have been hard on Chang all season but just like RSL he showed up late. I think he could be a pretty good player to have to sub in late if you aren't looking for too much defense or defending. His ability to get forward and be dangerous improved as the season went along but he still lacks a lot, a whole lot, on the defensive end of things. If he isn't starting and is used as a veteran off the bench when you are looking to get forward he might be a nice player to have. On the other hand if Pablo is still the HC and you're expecting him to develop young players then having Chang on the team would mean that young players sit while he goes with players he "trusts" so it's definitely going to be an interesting off season for sure.
https://kslsports.com/494653/real-salt-lake-announces-roster-decisions/ Buried at the bottom are some interesting dates: Pre-season begins Jan. 3-7. First game is Feb. 25, that's less than 4 months and similar to last year, at least they are moving up the major player acquisition events by about a month. Wish we knew when the transfer window opens. The schedule should be interesting. They are stopping for a month for Leagues Cup in the summer and want to more than double the playoff games. Surely MLS Cup is mid-late December next year.
How I rate this past season is that we are who we thought we were. I think we have a midtable roster, coached by a midtable coach, and put together by a midtable GM. From where I stand there are two ways to become a championship contender. Either replace the midtable roster/coach/GM with championship caliber roster/coach/GM, or hope that the midtable roster/coach/GM become championship caliber. Seems like we are trying the latter... Most important questions I want addressed this offseason: Do we have an ownership group that wants to be a championship type organization? and Who and how many midtable people are in the FO? IMO if the ownership is serious about winning we need to start with a championship caliber president/director (whatever that position is called) then work our way down to the roster. And maybe Kimball is that guy, IDK. But the owners should know. Until my questions get answered I don't really care what Fall and Pablo do... It likely won't be enough to win trophies.
