Mac Davis also had a hit with "Don't Get Hooked On Me", which was panned by women's rights groups as a chauvinistic song. He tried to appease the critics with a follow-up hit, "One Hell of a Woman". Another hit for Davis was "Lubbock, Texas in the Rearview Mirror". Also, the day he died, so did Helen Reddy, songstress of "I Am Woman". That was considered her signature song, but she had more hits than that. "I Don't Know How to Love Him" from the musical, 'Jesus Christ, Superstar' was her first hit in America. Born and raised in Australia, Reddy became a U.S. citizen in the mid or late 70's. At the time, she said in an interview that one thing she really liked about America was the way men treated women here. She thought men in Australia were more authoritative rather than laid back like here, which made the women in Oz more subservient to males. I wonder if she felt the same way about that comparison as the years went by.
