I know I will be bashed for this and a MOD should feel free to delete this post altogether but I wanted to get this off my chest at least: My Prediction for Group E Group E MP W D L GF GA +/- PTS USA 3 2 1 0 6 2 4 7 Czech Republic 3 1 2 0 4 3 1 5 Italy 3 1 1 1 2 3 -1 4 Ghana 3 0 0 3 2 6 -4 0
I predict that each team wins one, loses one and draws one and it all comes down to goal differential (what happens if that's also exactly equal? (FIFA probably has a formula that uses 1) number of vowels and 2) number of letters in the aggregate last names of the full squad, which tilts the table toward Italy and then Czechia
I really like our chances if it comes to that. Speaking of which, I've always heard of a coin flip as a possibility as a tie breaker but have never actually heard of it coming to that in any sport. Can you imagine though if it did? Would they televise the coin flip live? You would think they would have to unless they wanted everyone doubting its legitimacy. What a spectacle that would be. They should allow the supporters to come and cheer for their respective sides of the coin.
It has come to that before. I believe that it happened at either the u-20 or u-17 in 2003. I could be wrong on the event, but I distinctly remember it happening. I just can't remember if it was in qualifying for the event or the event itself.
Everyone beats Ghana 2-0 and Italy, US and Czechs all draw 1-1. Being completely even, FIFA breaks out its new tie-breaking system designed to garner a massive boost in TV Ratings-- each squad sends out one player to wrestle Goaleo, the plush-made man-sized lion. Kasey Keller grins wickedly, and the US advances to play Australia in the round of 16.
Canada won the Gold Cup after tieing Colombia and Korea on points, goals for and against. They won the coin flip and Korea had to go home.
Was that tournament specific or do they use that in the World Cup Finals as well? I'd rather they have the managers wrestle each other, or an after-the-fact round robin shoot out or just about anything else. Rock/scissors/paper, anyone?
Maybe not a coin flip, but blind luck was indeed a factor in qualifying for the 1954 World Cup in Switzerland. From the Fifa website: Facts & Figures A fated draw: on 17 March 1954, unseeded Turkey played seeded Spain in Rome to decide which team would go through. With one win apiece up until then, this was the conclusive match. A draw at full-time was resolved by a 14-year-old Roman boy called Luigi Franco Gemma. Luigi, his eyes blindfolded, drew Turkey from the lots, creating the first sensation of the tournament as Spain went out...
Sydney Olympics: I belive the USA women and Norway tied for first in the group. USA won the coin flip.
...and if we do win on a coin flip, for how many years will we have to listen to "weighted coin conspiracy" claims from the Italians?
I´m sure Bianca know about Reepabahn...but well Bltleo will be in Hamburg as well....so I will take care of Landon....don´t worry....He will have no time to visit Reepabahn.....and maybe he will decide to stay in Germany after the World Cup.....I will work on it.... bltleo GERMANY
It probably won't come down to a coin flip based on the rules. Look up the Regulations of the World Cup on http://fifaworldcup.yahoo.com/06/en/w/doc.html Article 31 section 5
If my proevolution soccer is right, it's USA and Spain in the Final. We beat Brazil in the 2nd round 3-0, and Freddy Adu is there. I know ... I know... Spain in the final, that can't happen.
I was naive enough to think that the "we are screwed" and "we will top the group of death" threads already covered this whole concept of silly early predictions.....
yes my dutch friend....anyway it is funny that you always visit such threads your friend from Germany
