Been keeping an eye on him since @krass posted about him in the Promising Footballers thread.

Yesterday he came in as an LM, and then shifted to LB as the game went on and other changes were made. He put in a solid defensive effort, but mainly looked like a guy who doesn't want to risk anything on his debut.

The guy has played as 10, 5, 8, and on the sides of the midfield for the U20s. Vision and physicality are his best attributes. Curious where he'll ultimately end up.

    10, 8 and 5?

    Hmm.

    Curious indeed.

Let's see if he gets a lot more playing time.

Flamengo sent this guy to Mazatlan on loan.

Got his first start last night and didn't do too bad. Played on the righthand side. The field was awful, and that affected his play. But he put in great defensive work and had a wicked shot.

Damn. I forgot how long ago he popped up.

So...His Mazatlan loan didn't go perfect. He had a few decent games. A red card match cut his opportunities completely.

Last summer he was signed by Guarani and played a few matches in Serie B before the season ended.

Recently, he's been playing VERY well in the Paulista. He even scored today. Only 22 and offers qualities in CM that Colombia could use.

Another solid game from this guy. Scored. Very physical play from central midfield.

Had a feeling this guy would do way better than Atuesta.

Not as good as Atuesta from what I have seen but still pretty good distribution.

Atuesta's whole game is distribution and to split the defense with a pass when he sees a window.

Rios can do those things, but he spends far more of his time disrupting the opponents play, getting physical, and chasing down possession. However, I think that's what he's being asked to do by his coaches. When he was a sub 20 player, I remember seeing play as a 10...

I think the biggest difference between the two is instinct. Rios' first instinct when getting the ball in open space is to pause play, which makes sense since he is a former micro footballer. Atuesta play a lot more one-touch passes. Additionally, Rios has far more confidence dribbling out of presses, which, again, fits his background.

Generally, Rios is much more physical defensively and much more apt to play against physical opponents.

Atuesta messed up his ACL. He'll be out for months.

However, in the little bit of time Rios has been with the club, I see Palmeiras is giving him more significant minutes in games that matter than they ever gave to Atuesta. Not sure if that might translate to eventually becoming a starter for them. It may just be because Rios' physicality makes him an ideal sub, while Atuesta is not.

I definitely think he should be on the NT radar. There may not be a space for him right now, but he is only 22. Plays tough.

I haven't seen him play but they seem to really like him and i've only seen good things about him on twitter, I wonder if he is similar to Barrios. Now we just need some consistency from this guy and hopefully keep the injuries to a minimum

The Palmeiras fans have been brutal to read the past two years on Atuesta. If they take to Rios, they are a tough crowd.

His film looks good though from today:

its not like Brazil going to cap him we don't have to rush to.

If he won't start and it will hurt his chances of winning his spot in Brazil then leave him there but the NT coaches should be in contact with him.

As for who we call ahead of him (Castano and Nelson Palacios) hopefully it gets them moves abroad. Uribe is here to stay until someone abroad does better.

It looks like their fan base will clamor for him to start which is great at a team like Palmeiras where the fans are really tough...

Part of it, I think is that they haven't been too keen on their DMs at all (not just Atuesta) and they feel like they got one on Flamengo who let Rios go on a free and they are pumped to troll them.
